Tax on car off the road

Our car has been off the road for months now, as it would not start, and tax is now overdue by 3 months. However at this stage, we are not going to bother getting it back on the road. Question is are we still liable for back tax?

Can we just scrap/sell it for parts or will it continue to incur tax charges until declared scrapped? One friend says as long as it never goes back on the road, we can forget about it but someone else said that recent changes in law mean we continue to clock up arrears in taxes until a "death cert" is provided...is that true?

You only have to pay back tax if you actually tax it

you will never have to pay the road tax unless you put it back on the road.

As you never declared it off road, it continues to incur charges.
Once a wheel never hits a public road you don't need to tax it.
If your scrapping it make sure you get an end of life certificate and you don't drive it to the scrapyard

I have declared an old car off the road for 5yrs while trying to repair it bit by bit.

Last year I missed the online declaration deadline in April and despite writing to tax office when I coped it, they want the tax paid.

Car is now repaired and ready for NCT/tax, anyway to get tax office to cut someone a break?

Doubt it, you could make up some story about needing to go to Australia to look after a sick relative, think that worked for someone on here.

Yes you can, adds two owners though which is a shame on an older car

Car is a 00 reg, worth €500 so just a weekender. Tax is €700/yr so a real killer.

Anyone try geting letter from a local peace commissioner or someone..

No, just "sell it" to a friend and "buy it back". That how you do it, easy as could be.
