Started new job, salary lower than agreed

    So, I started a new job this week as office admin. Turns out I'm actually going to be working as account admin, OK no problem I can do that. Today they sent my contract, they've lowered my salary by 1,000 and my position title is stated as office admin. I'm not happy at all about this, but am unsure if I should push on it. Any advice is welcome!

    You should definitely bring it up to HR. If they start screwing you over at this stage they'll never stop, and you'll never be satisfied in your role

    I'm meeting with him Friday, I haven't signed it. I don't want to under those circumstances, but I'm anxious as hell that they'll rescind the offer

    I would imagine it's an honest mistake.
    Nobody in their right mind would try pulling a fast one like that and hope they would get away with it.

    Do not accept any salary if the amount is incorrect. Accepting salary constitutes acceptance of the contract even if it isn't signed..

    Absolutley bring this up , your fears about the offfer being retracted , when you think about it are probably not evidence based , I agree it’s probably a mistake but you need to clarify this before you start working with a source for resentment already festering away .

    What title did you think it was going to be?

    How was your starting salary agreed?

    In future (I know, hindsight is 20/20) get the contract in advance of starting.

    Feckin hope so, job title/change doesn't bother me think I'll actually enjoy it. But the salary has really annoyed me. Thanks for all the advice everyone, really appreciate it

    An agreement is an agreement. Regardless of the job title they should pay the agreed salary

    €1000 is €1000.

    Even after deductions it would go a long way towards covering car insurance/electricity/gas etc

    Absolutely right, and at the end of the day it can probably be traced back to someone writing the wrong number down on a form they don't want to refile. Easier for them to say "oh it's really THIS" instead of just redoing the paperwork. Sad and lazy, but I've seen it happen more than once.

    Stick to your guns. You were promised what you were promised. If they pull out the old "well then we'd have to do it for everyone", then tough cookies, they can explain to "everyone" that they had to make an exception for you.

    A company that would try to pull a fast one like that especially at the start of a new relationship isn't a company I would want to work for or with. In business I've cut customers of mine loose for trying to pull similar sh*te.

    I suppose how much of an issue you take with it depends on your on financial circumstances.

    No, the OP has said that he was specifically told the salary was being lowered.

    How far are you prepared to push this OP? Because I know if it was me it would be a short conversation, I get the salary agreed or i immediately walk out the door.

    Forget the money, the principle is important here, what they have done is outrageous and if you bend over and take it then you will probably find it to be the first of many times they treat you like a fool.

    Sort that ****e out now or you will regret it further down the line.

    I've emailed hr and said the position I took and the position I am required to do are 2 different things and I'd like my contract to reflect this. And that the agreed upon salary is not something I'm prepared to deviate from especially considering I've already accepted and started the position. He said we'll talk tomorrow.

    Out of curiousity: Is it a permanent contract and are you employed with the company or an agency?
    I had a big well known company trying to pull a fast one on me in a similar matter and that was also in the stage of signing the contract,I just didn't work for them already. I kindly told them that we're not going to have a future together.

    Employed by the company directly, there's a probation period but a permanent position if that makes sense

    Update: I've spoken to him, and he explained budget was a concern. I repeated that I'd want to stick to my original salary offer and he agreed. So its sorted. Back to 3m probation period. My job title will be office admin as many tasks the previous person did have been outsourced, in a way. I'm happy with the outcome, and thanks everyone for the advice and support

    If he gets let go after 3 months, his CV would already be up to date.

    I wouldn't be adding work experience for a role lasting less than 3 months. It opens up all sorts of questions that are difficult to answer.

    Its sorted.

    Except for the fact that no reputable boss or company would ever unilaterally change an agreed salary in the way that he did, nobody in their right mind would ever think that was acceptable.

    You have been given a huge red flag about this person and that company, I wouldn't ignore that.
