Anaphylaxis and EpiPens

    Hi all,

Just curious if any here have had a bad allergic reaction and how they have managed afterwards.

A few months ago I had an allergic reaction (not sure exactly what triggered it though). A couple of Epi-Pen shots resolved the issue and I'm ok since.

Naturally I now carry an Epi-Pen, with a second one nearby. But three months on and I thankfully haven't needed it. However I'm avoiding a couple of things just in case.

How often have you used your Epi-Pens?

My current ones have a shelf life of about a year from when I bought them, do most Epi-Pens get used or are they like safety belts/air bags that only rarely get used but nevertheless invaluable when needed?

My child carries an epi pen. He had two episodes that required him to carry the pen, he was 5 at the time. We are really careful with food and medicine and he takes anti antihistamine everyday. If he has a reaction, it has never gone to the level before (epi and ambulance), just an instant rash comes up but an extra dose of anti hist will calm things back.
He is 8 now and am not sure how long he is to stay on the antihistamine, but for now it has helped.

I had an anaphylactic reaction to penicillin about 7 years ago - carried an EpiPen for a while, but don’t anymore. Thankfully haven’t experienced anything like it since but I was lucky that I knew what had caused it. No harm in keeping one with you for the foreseeable. Unfortunately, they do go out of date very quickly.

At about €95 for two and lasting about a year (the pharmacist ordered in new stock so I got the maximum shelf life), it's not even the price of a pint every two weeks so I'm definitely keeping one with me always.
