We are thinking of moving to Australia and will be renting a house. I have looked online but dont see much mention about dogs being allowed in rentals. In NZ most adds specify whether pets are welcome or not. Anybody any information or experience on this in Australia?

Dogs in rental accommodation is a contentious issue at the minute. It is much harder to find rental accommodation that allow pets. There is talk of legislation/rules to be introduced so pet owners cannot be reasonably denied a rental property on the basis of them having a pet.

This is relevant for Victoria at least

As it stands right now, pet owners are at a disadvantage in the rental market, especially in the major cities where the rental market is already tough.

Are you thinking of bringing a dog with you? Because, you probably know this already, but that's a bit of a a production in terms of both time and money, and you need to start working on it many months before you actually travel. Just sayin'.

Yes, bringing a dog with us.

We are in a rental and to be honest there are usually so many people going for decent rentals that having a dog would most likely go against you. At the very least you will be limited to far fewer choices.

Best bet is to aim further out in the suburbs where you are most likely to get a mam and dad style landlord (as opposed to investors), this would increase your chance of getting a dog loving landlord or a house where a dog has previously lived.

We have a dog in a Meriton (big rental company) complex. Our neighbours have dogs too and no issues. Don't be stressing about it - just do your homework on quarantine requirements to get the dog into Australia.
