Hey, a pal just brought home a Switch from the US for an xmas present. Does he need to buy a euro powerpack, or just a US/Ireland adaptor?

It depends on what it says on the adapter its self , if its input range is 100-240v all he needs is an adapter ,if not he will probably need a power pack

Thanks. I don't see any reason a standard travel adapter won't work, but sure they may as well get the official charger from argos or somewhere.

Yeah, easy to find a charger here to get him gaming on this side of the pond.

The chargers are universal, just need a travel adapter as said, or could splash out on a USBC to USBA cable and use your phone charger.

I thought the adapter for the dock had a higher voltage (15V?) available to it over and above the stand 5v 2.x output of a usual USB wall wart. As such, you can charge your Switch from a standard charger but I don't know if it affects it's ability to run docked, or at least run docked without leaning on the battery.

15v 2.6A I think was the output. 39W defintely rings a bell. Anyone near their switch dock can confirm. they could also tell you if the plug has a real or plastic ground pin in case you're thinking the UK version is somehow electrically safer than the US one with a new plug wired on or a travel adapter.

At a push, Smyths have the dock + adapter set reduced (don't get excited, it's still 60 quid) so you'd have the official adapter plus a spare dock to use in work or on a spare TV where using the US adapter feels like less of a hazard?

    Now...

    Looking at this
https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Switch-AC-Adapter/dp/B01N7RUZ49 it suggests that the US adapter only needs a socket adapter as it is set to use 110 or 220, without burning down the house.
Check the rating on the PSU included, if you see 110/240v then it's a multiregion PSU and will work all over the globe.

I take no responsibility for house fires or other damage as a result of this advice!
