anyone use an apprentice mechanic to fix machinery. There is a local lad around here in year 2 of his trade. Thinking of asking him to do a few jobs on a tractor which he could do at my place on the evenings.

My own mechanic is very good but can be very slow even for small jobs. What would be the right price be for an apprentice if he was paid cash?

When I was an apprentice I was shoeing horses at the same rate as every qualified man in the area. I reckon a man cam either do the job or he can't. So I wasn't tackling into complicated lameness cases or anything but I could do a standard set of shoes as well as any man.
I'd be thinking if you pay him the same as you'd pay your own mechanic, maybe a little under that seeing as it will only be a nixer of a job then maybe he might be more likely to look after you when he's set up in his own business.

A second year apprentice would get around 7 euro an hour in the workshop.

Yeah but the workshop will stand over his work. Will you be willing to do the same.

I.e. something goes wrong is it your bad luck or the apprentice that's responsible. If the apprentice is responsible they should be paid accordingly.

In an ideal world yes, but that is the injustice of being an apprentice.

It's up to the apprentice but I personally wouldn't do a nixer and stand over it at the wage I'm getting in the workshop.

Somewhere between the apprentice wage and workshop price would be appropriate.

They won't give receipts, they usually won't have the same experience as the older lads so can come across "new problems " that will take them more time anyway. Your as well off get the job done with an experienced lad. You'll find in the long run it's the best, for peace of mind alone.
