    Hi,

My daughter is going to cello lessons (a complete beginner) where she has a cello but the teacher doesn't. He teaches using a piano to illustrate musical points.

Is this normal/commonplace/a good idea ?

Seems to me a cello teacher should have a cello !

It can occur at a high level tuition, as musicality, stylization etc are the major concerns. In such case, the technique of the student can be much better than the tutor's one.

However for a beginner, if possible, it is recommended to study with a tutor whose major is in the instrument to gain proper techniques.
