Question - new boiler

    Hello,

Hope someone can help. We got a new oil boiler put in about two months ago. I think he said something about that there was a stat on it, so when temp fell below freezing it would turn on.

The problem is, is that the heat is on all day now because it’s so cold outside. The house is ROASTING!!. And we’ll run out of oil in no time. The switch to turn the heat on/off is turned to off but (because of this stat) the heat is still on. I just went out to the shed and turned the powrr off to the boiler out there. Is that a big no no?

There should be a stat. in the shed near the boiler. It may be set at too high a temp, set it for -2 or so.
It shouldn't over ride the timer switch in your kitchen/utility though.I think

Yeah we put it on manually. But it’s turning on it’s too. I’ll check to see if I can find the stat itself.

It defiantly is though. The switch out there is set to off, but the heat is still coming on. I rang the electrician & is apprentice fitted the time clock. He said the stat on the boiler kicks it to stop it from freezing.

A frost stat overrides the time clock. you will have to find the frost stat. it should be near or on top of the boiler

Found it. He had it set to 3 degrees. I’ve moved to to 0.

Thanks for all your help. I don’t know what I’d do without boards

Setting the frost protection stat below freezing point defeats the purpose of it and may put the boiler at risk.
All frost protection stats should be fitted to override all other controls, otherwise it is rendered useless.

The stat really should not be set at zero, two at minimum. Seeing as water freezes at zero, you may have inadvertently put your boiler at risk.
Get the installer back to change from the heating zone that is activated to the hot water cylinder only, or to fit a by-pass valve so the pump will circulate through that without going to either the rads or the cylinder.

Perhaps fit a pipe stat on the return.

That would help things, but still with the rad circuit off and the pump running through either the cylinder circuit or an auto by-pass valve.
