Taxation in new job

    Hi,

So I'm moving jobs just before the Xmas and I'm a bit afraid of getting stung with my wages. Basically my salary will be 28k a year with it being paid on a monthly basis. I've been assured by my new boss that I will get the full month pay on the Thursday before the Xmas break. I'm starting this Monday in the new role. After working my notice, I'll be receiving my P45 with my week in hand this Friday from previous employers and it will be with my new employers by the Monday but I don't know if that will be enough time for the tax credits to be issued?

I guess my question comes down to this - my monthly pay should be €2300 before tax. If I do get caught out for tax and my credits aren't issued, what should I expect my pay to be prior to Xmas?

Our previous payroll person said that I could claim it back on January 1 when my P60 is out, but having not really received anything back taxwise from Revenue Online previously (all my taxes were correctly deducted), I am a bit unsure how to process that correctly?

Thanks for any help, just worried coming up to the Xmas break.

You're unlikely to be taxed correctly seeing as its so close to Christmas and tax year end. You might not have a choice but to be emergency taxed and claim it back next year through a P21 balancing statement. Make sure you are registered on revenue.ie in advance of the new year so there wont be a delay.

Note that your employer has until mid February to issue the P60 so I wouldnt be expecting it on January 1st.

    Thanks for the reply.

Yeah I was fearing that. And the emergency rate is 40% right? So it'd be in or around 1400 I'd be expecting?

And can I claim it back through revenue online immediately in the New Year? Or do I wait until my employer gets it in my next pay? And is there a way to do that correctly? Without me making a mess of it and them giving me nothing back!

    40% doesn't kick in until week 9.

For the first few weeks, the rate is low enough. You're not likely to get stung badly.

Your new employer will have your tax credits from your P45 so emergency tax shouldn't apply in this case. Usually emergency tax is for a 1st employment, if you haven't worked for a while or if you do not have a P45 for some reason.

Just to enquire further to this following my question a few weeks ago that you guys were able to help with -

So I think that I'm owed tax back on last years earnings, do I have to wait until my P60 is out before claiming it or can I do it online with the P21 form now? I checked my revenue online details and it doesn't seem to have any income details for my new job - my payday was 2 days before the Xmas break.

Revenue won't have any details of your pay and tax until your employer files their end of year p35 with Revenue. They have until mid February to do it.
Its usually best to wait for the p60 and input the details from it or wait for the details to show up when your employer files the p35. You can request the p21 then.
