paying deposit to repairs

    Just a quick question.

    We have some repairs and works for our home and found a builder but he asks 50% upfront deposit to begin with works then in a week when done, should pay the rest
    Can we really rely on paying monies before works just afraid if he doesnt turn up?

    just confused as some say its ok depends again but some say-never pay upfront payment but this guy said will only start when paid

    Has he done work for anyone u know or Did you just get him off the internet?
    If you got him off the internet I wouldn't consider it for a second. If he did work for people u know ask them did they have to do similar.
    It's not a good sign to be honest

    If you decide to use him after further investigations & he is not budging on the deposit you could tell him you will pay 50% after the 1st days work with materials on site. I built a conservatory for a customer that didnt want to give me a deposit in case I ran away! I had to buy the conservatory unit myself. He said he would pay me 1st day on site. I didnt get a chance to reverse into his drive as on arrival he was waiting for me & he paid me through the window of the van! An honest man but not everyone is like that
