Buying alloys for a VW Golf MK5?

Someone stole two of the hubcaps from my car, and rather than just replace those, if I could get a pair of original Mark 5 alloys cheap I would prefer this, and by cheap I mean €100 or €200 for the set.

Are eBay and Adverts the best places to organise this? Should I call around scrappers yards or garages? Shipping from the UK may be expensive considering the weight.

What size should I get? My car currently has the original wheels on it, but I would consider a different size if it did not drive the price up, and it would give a performance and/or aesthetic boost?

If I get a size larger than whatever the standard is, will the tyres also need to be replaced if the alloys do not come with tyres?

I spoke with a few parts suppliers and they said when they have a set of 16" originals Mark 5 alloys I could take them for €200 with good tyres. Is this a good deal?

Yes its a good deal but it all depends on the tyres to be honest.

The tyres may look like there's plenty of life left in them but they do degrade over time so check how old they are, there will be a 4 digit date code on the side of the tyre.
Something like 2614, that would be the 26th week of 2014.

Thanks for all the helpful replies.

For the money, what should I expect in terms of the date on the tires? Does brand matter, or is a good condition tire and good condition tire?

Who knows on date, anything from 2004 when the mk5 was released.
NCT flag old tyres but I'm not sure of the limit.

There is a huge difference in tyre brands, the flat earthers of the motors forum will try to tell you otherwise but there is a difference.
Michelin, Goodyear, Continental, Dunlop, Pirelli, would be higher end, hankook, vredestein, toyo, bf goodrich, would be mid range and anything like stunner, linglong, and the like would be only suitable for burning.

Cousin had a set of 15" golf alloys on his car, but took them off for a set of larger wheels.

I used them for a week while getting mine refurbished, so they are left in my shed. I can ask and see if they are for sale if you want? Tyre thread is so so, most aren't too far off the limit.

This isn't a pic of the actual alloys btw

That'd mean the OP could use their existing tyres id say.

Thanks for this, and I appreciate the offer, but I think if I can get a set of 16" I would prefer that.

I just spoke to one of the parts places and the guy told me he had Passat Alloys, and when I said I was looking for original Golf Mark V, he said there are maybe 20 different types of alloys that come on the Golf. When I asked about the tyres he just said he has no idea, it's the alloys they are selling, and they come with whatever tyres they get.

I am looking at a set online, can one of you PM me, if you would not mind me running the item by you before purchase?

I do not really want to discuss openly in this thread.

Few months late but don't suppose you still have these knocking around the shed?

You will also need the correct studs for the alloy wheels . The studs for your current steel wheels won't suit the alloy wheels .
