Parnell Street, D1, development?

I've noticed that Enzo's take-away beside Fibbers has been closed for a month or two. There's also a vacant site a couple of doors up, and the Welcome Inn on the corner looks like it has been closed down for years (although I occasionally see somebody standing in the doorway like there's something going on inside it.)

Does anyone know if there is some re-development planned for that stretch of the street? It's right opposite the new Luas platform, and there's two new student accommodation buildings just up the road at Summerhill, so there'd be a fair amount of new footfall.

Aren't there squatters in the building beside Fibbers?

That's across the road. This one is closer: Academy Plaza Hotel, Nos 10-14 Findlater Place, & 83-85, Parnell Street, Dublin 1

Would be nice to see something done to the Welcome Inn, the building has been the same for the last 30 years, unused, unloved.

LUAS will lead to big changes to Marlborough Street and many other unloved areas, hopefully for the better.

It’s not that long since the bar was regularly open. Part of the charm of the place was the fact that the interior hadn’t been changed (or cleaned) since circa 1970. You kind of have to admire the owner - he opened and shut the place when it suited him, and kicked everyone out if the feeling for bar tending left him of an evening. Not too many city centre pubs could afford to be so blasé about turning a profit.

Hasn't looked to be open any I passed it over the last 25 years.
It looks manky outside, can't imagine what the inside looks like.

That part of Parnell Street has looked bad for 20 years.

The Welcome has not been unused. Up to maybe last year or so, he was still opening it fairly regularly, if sporadically. Nice spot in a timewarp kind of way.

The licence was last valid in 2011. So I'd hope he hasn't been!

There's actually a thread from 2011 here stating it was closed for good.

I've certainly been in it since then, but best say nothing.
