I’m off on holidays tomorrow (woohoo :D ) for 12 days. If i charge the car ( leaf) fully tonight by the time i get to the airport tomorrow it’ll be at about 75%. Is that too high of a % to leave it at for 12days? Should i maybe just charge to 80-90% tonight instead? I’ll only need about 25% to get home from the airport after the holiday.

Set it to stop charging at 80%. You'll still have enough to get you home and it'll be sitting at 55% instead of 75%.

Thanks. I can't set the car to 80% (30kwh leaf) but it says it will take 5hrs for a full charge so I have just set the timer to come on for 3hrs which should bring me up to around 80% I think

Ah ok. Didn't realise it wasn't an option on the 30kw/h Leaf.

    Enjoy your holidays!

I couldn’t see it as an option anywhere...someone else might confirm though?

And thanks - will do! Finish work tomorrow & not back until Jan :D

You are correct, the 80% option is not in your car.

You will have to manually do it.

Leave it at 50% -30% and not below 30% then set it to charge to 100% the night before you leave back for Dublin or before you depart for Dublin, give it enough time. around 6-7 hrs hrs at 3.3 Kw from 30%.

The Idea is to keep it in it's comfort zone and that's below 80% for sure, 12 days is a long time to sit at 80 odd % even 75%.

I've left the leaf multiple times in the airport for 7-14 days ranging from 70-90%. Never had more than a 5% loss.

56% is far better than 70+ %. Lithium batteries are under greater stress the longer they are at a high charge %.

Nissan state that if the Leaf battery is above 80% or below , if I remember correctly 20%, for more than 2 weeks it could void the warranty but I wouldn't leave it at this charge other than a few hrs.

Just on this, if one does little mileage weekly would this be bad for an electric car?

It's not ideal, batteries don't like to be too high or too low charge wise. Lithiums like to be charged only when needed and that goes for power tools too. They don't like to be too low a charge either, so 30% is fine to leave it if not driving it a day or two or if you are not sure when you might need it then charge to 50% then it won't take so long when you need it.

I used to set the timer for 2-3 hrs when pottering around which at 3.3 Kw would give me about 3 Kw into the battery per hour.

There are various factors that effect battery life including time itself but the idea is to keep it as healthy as possible for as long as possible and simple things to do like not keeping it at 80+% for extended periods. Charge when you need it, charging to 100% every day is not a problem if you're driving it. If you don't need all the range daily then charge to 80%.

I miss this function with the BMW I3 which always wants to charge to 100% and you have 0 control over it and that bugs me, but now I just charge to 100% and drive it a couple of days when I'm off shift just pottering around.
