    Hi folks,

I'm getting the normal go to workshop yellow light on the dash. Mechanic read the code and it's an EGR value.

He said he could remove it - be cheaper than fitting a new one.

However I hear fuel economy would be worse from then on...also would my car insurance by void by removing this component ?

Anyone else have their's removed etc ,any issues with the NCT etc?

    Thanks
    mada

Have you had the VW software update done on the car?

If so, head to a main dealer.

no didnt get it done yet... heard the update is causing this issue

I can't say for this car exactly, but I suspect it's too modern to be able to just remove the EGR valve without it either complaining, running poorly, or both, without software modification.

NCT doesn't test for NOx emissions.

To be fair if you have no intention of getting the update there's a reasonable arguement for getting it removed.

What kind of mileage is on the car and what is he quoting you for the two jobs?

I've heard that if you've had the update done and this issue occurs, then VW will cover the replacement cost. If the update hasn't been done, then there's no coverage from the main dealer, so stick with an independent mechanic.

Hi mada 99. Definitely no problem to flash out the egr. It was done lately on one of the 2 litre passats at work and no problem.. they usually don't give much bother on the 2litre. But seem to pack up in the 1.6 around 100k. Our work passat was a 131 with 250k . And to flash out cost around 150. New egr 1100 ouch.

there's only 99,000 km on the car

sound... just wondering why it is so expensive to replace new as the part is only around €350 and a half days work.

Can anyone answer the insurance query ? Would the insurance company void any claims as a part has been removed from the car etc ?

    Thanks,

    mada

Hi.. 350 sounds far too cheap for genuine egr valve. And it's a hard days work to change it.. 2011 and only 19k. That tells a lot towards the problem. The diesels of today are not made for low mileage & short runs. Whether you get egr programmed out or replaced. Make sure the Correct grade 5w30. Vw specification oil is always used and a hard motorway drive monthly works wonders.. 2 litre is great engine but do it a favour & give it a regular workout where it reaches its preferred temperature & burns out all deposits.. run this by your own mechanic and he'll agree.. Oh and only the Correct spec oil. Not any 5/30 , trust me it's cheaper than repairs after using cheap stuff.

thanks.... there was a typo it should be 99,000km. I will say that i only live about 10 mins away from work.. although i also be on the motorway once a week for a few miles

    Rang the mechanic

    1. replace the EGR value - €800
    2. remove it - €300

Wow! And I thought BMW were robbers. Had the EGR replaced on my last car, 2013 BMW 525D, by a main dealer.....for €360, parts and labour.

    Not really relevant.

Your car has an EGR that can be replaced separately to the cooler. The OP’s car has one EGR and cooler assembly.

On your car the EGR is easily accessible on the front of the engine. On the OP’s car is it underneath the turbo on the rear of the engine.

So both the parts and labour are more expensive for this particular job on the VW.

Well for a part that causes so many issues in modern diesels maybe vw could have placed in somewhere easily accessible.

Yes, it's either bad design or they deliberately made it so there's more work for the mechanics (main dealer mechanics, of course!), and it was also VW's choice to fully integrate the EGR cooler, thus increasing costs for EGR valve replacement substantially.

That's true. The BMW N47 timing chain is another example of that.

Yep, won't disagree with that. This is not bmw vs vw by the way, which seems to be how it's been taken up. Owned both and would have a passat over any mondeo, insignia, mazda etc.

anyone know if insurance would be void if I get the mechanic to remove the part?

They could see it as engine modifications that you never informed them of.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 472 ✭✭Turbohymac

Jesus. It's not adding any extra performance or anything to the car to start worrying about insurance..theres loads cars and commercial vehicles chipped for 15% more bhp. And none of these people informs their insurance and their cars would be far more emissions unfriendly than your car having egr programmed out.. your call your money but if it was me id programme it out same as one of our work passats here. Otherwise replace valve/cooler unit. Even your mechanic is quoting well for supplying and fitting. The valve and cooler is at back of engine and very difficult to get to

Clear the fault, get the update done before the fault re occurs, then when the 'light' comes back on, back to the dealer and VW will most likely cover the egr replacement......it has been done that way.....

yup checked it out and in the booklet i'm seeing this :

    any modifications unless they form
    part of the manufacturers standard
    specification or are optional extras
    that we have agreed to cover;
