    Hi there

We are getting married in Mauritius next year. Please can someone advise if we can / have to register marriage in Ireland? Travel agent said we can register with GRO if we want, then folks at GRO advised that registration is not necessary.

What are your experience please? I would like to have Irish marriage cert for Revenue etc

    Many thank

You will only get an Irish marriage certificate if you marry in Ireland.
As long as you're legally married in Mauritius, then you're legally married in Ireland and your Mauritian (?) cert will do.

Thanks for your response. So in case if my Mauritian marriage cert gets stolen or somehow damaged, I'll need yo request a copy there? Many thanks

I imagine that most countries have the same set up, so yes.

Yes if you lose your marriage cert you will have to replace it with another Mauritian cert.
I think you were wondering if the fact that you had a Mauritian marriage cert would mean you could get an Irish one.
    The answer is no.
If you ever need to deal with SW for a means tested payment they will need an original Marriage cert because they only have access to Irish ones, so be sure and get a few before you come back.

Thanks. I assume Revenue will also be happy with Mauritius cert. I find it very strange that GRO doesn't register these marriages and makes me question all statistics on wedddings / divorces ...

Well as long as you're honest in the next census, you won't have a negative affect on the statistics.

Got married in Malta 2 years ago had to register with foreign affairs I think it was no earlier them 10 weeks and no lather then 6 before the wedding. Every country is different I think but your travel agent should by rights know. Id start with phone call to DFA. Sooner the better because when we were going through everything they sent back herselfs birth certificate with a discrepancie they couldn't decide if an "r" was an "n" and had to get it re done really put the pressure on us time wise. You will most likely need solicitors to do little paperwork too.

Thanks for your response. I assume you needed Certificate of Freedom to Marry which is required by some countries, it is not in Mauritius.

GRO are there to collate and keep a permanent record of all the births deaths and marriages which take place in Ireland. There’s no reason for them to be interested in any births deaths and marriages involving Irish citizens which occur abroad.
Would it be compulsory to notify GRO of your foreign born Irish citizen baby, and how would they impose that?

Well, I have dual citizenship and in my country of birth you have to register your wedding which occured abroad. Its a simple process in civil office which takes 5 mins. They issue a marriage certificate / confirmation which you can then use wherever necessary.

No need to respond with cynical questions here ;)

GRO statistics on weddings in Ireland are just that - weddings in Ireland, not the number of people living in Ireland who are married.

We don't have registration of citizens so the Census is the only statistic on the number of people who live in Ireland who are married and they don't care where you got married.

I’m not being cynical at all. Is the registration of a foreign marriage compulsory in your country of origin or is it an option?
It’s an interesting concept if it’s compulsory.

It is compulsory. What interests me is that in Ireland it is not even an option.

Anyways, one thing less to think about.

Do make sure you get as many marriage certs as you can though, Irish beaurocracy is always looking for foreign certs!

So what happens if you don't register it? Are you legally single, and free to marry someone different in your home country?

If you don't mind me asking, what is your home country?
