Hey all, just wondering would anyone be able to shed some light on this for me.

The last while, only now and again I've noticed a loud whirring/engine noise after I turn off the car.

It usually lasts no more than 30 seconds or so but it is loud. Im driving a 2012 1.6 Diesel Golf. There are no warning lights etc on the dashboard when driving or anything that feels out of the ordinary. Its happened maybe twice in the last two weeks.

Im going to bring it to a garage for a service anyways soon but just wondering if anyone would have any idea what it could be.

Sounds like it's just the fan staying on for a while after you turn the engine off

I have a 1.6 diesel golf 2013 and it has started doing the same thing. It is the fan staying on and as you said it can be quite loud. The temp gauge is fine but I do feel some heat from the back of car. I'll prob get it checked out. I find it happens more if I do a lot of stop/start driving. just thought I would share as maybe it's a golf thing.

It's the fan. Your radiator may be on it's last legs. Get it checked out.

A lot of Mk6 and Mk7 Golf owners complain of this. Generally it happens when the car is turned off while it is in the middle of a DPF regeneration, the fan will run on after the car is turned off to ensure the DPF cools down to a safe level.

Obviously get the car checked to rule out a cooling system issue but I'd wager it's just a DPF regen being stopped mid cycle.

If that's happening repeatedly though, the car is seemingly keen to get a regen done though, so maybe if you've been doing a lot of short trips, take it out for a good run to allow it to complete.

I had this on my mk5 gti but only after I had the thermostat changed.
The heat at the back of the car was unbelievable!
I had some bodywork done on the car and it hasnt happened since.??Maybe the cold weather.
Monitored the cars temps for a while with odb2 but it was always the same and the fan seemed random.

I read that if the main fan fails the small fan (ac?) will fun all the time or something like that.

OP, there's probably nothing wrong with the car. As you've said it's a Golf diesel, you probably turned it off when the car was doing a DPF regeneration. If you switch off when the car is doing a regeneration, the cooling fans kick in to cool things down (in most VAG cars anyway). The regeneration generates quite high temperatures and the fan is there to cool things down.

Edit - Toyotafaboi beat me to it..............

I'd put money on it being your DPF finishing it's regeneration cycle.

I had this on my mk5 gti

    Don't you have a DPF delete done ? :D

It's amazing the amount of times i'll be walking through the work car park or a large shopping centre car park to see a modern diesel car parked up and locked with the fans hopping out of it - it has to be down to the amount of people buying diesels cars who don't really do the type of driving these cars need.

My A6 TDI does it now and again mainly after a short spin to town. The car also does a 100km round trip daily......

Yep, happens to my car frequently, the fans really are going mental when it’s running. Bought due to the wife doing massive mileage for work but that all changed a few months after we bought it. Lots of short trips now, so get this a lot. I did mention it to vw at service and they said it’s perfectly normal. Back to petrol in the new year.

We’ve a 1.6 Leon and it does this quite a lot after short runs, these cars are programmed to do a regen v often in order to keep the dpf cleared out. As others say take it for a longer driver to allow the forced regen to complete- it’s not a problem
