Monitor the games your kids are playing, particularly if there is an online dimension to them. Sure, the game itself may be marked PG and appropriate for an 8 year old but you need to watch who else is playing with them online. They could literally be anyway and they have a direct line to communicate with your child. At the very least you should actually play the game yourself to see first hand what they are doing, but you should monitor what is being communicated to your child.

    Some good tips here...

Hi being an IT professional, I have been constantly asked by parents how to secure their devices so Kids can't accidentally see something they should never see at a young age

So I thought this post might be useful

first off secure your Router with OpenDNS

    https://www.opendns.com/home-internet-security/

Choose the Family shield option this is completely free and blocks all questionable sites

    Enable "Safesearch" on Google

    https://www.wikihow.com/Enable-Google-Safesearch

Also block YouTube comments on Chrome

    https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/hide-youtube-comments/kehdmnjmaakacofbgmjgjapbbibhafoh?hl=en

If anybody has some more tips please post, and let's keep our kids safe online

Have you had much luck with OpenDNS route? I was thinking of making a PI Hole with a script to load the most common adult sites into the filter, but this would be much easier if it works!

I use K9. I also use Video Blocker on Chrome for certain Youtube channels, keywords etc.
I found OpenDNS too complicated but I haven't used it in a long time.

I find the ScreentimeLabs app very handy for monitoring usage, in particular to restrict to particular time boundries/limits

Yeah it's very easy, you just have to change your DNS settings on your router, and this will block every device connected to your router

It works great, I went through a lot of porn sites and everything was blocked, even weird fetish ones I never heard of (looked them up on reddit)

I've bought our pair an amazon fire kids edition tablet for christmas, which comes with all sorts of blockers including their own version of you tube which only has preapproved content.

like screentime above, there's a subscription of a few euro a month (in this case after the first year) but I'd say its worth it, especially to be able to control how long they're are on it as much as what they are looking at.

I'll come back with feedback after christmas if its as good as its promised to be !

I installed a Pi-hole a couple of months ago and love it. I had to replace our router with a Fritz box, as the ISP one wouldn't let me change the network settings.

As this thread started in 2017, is has anyone any updated info for current internet use?

I looked up K9 and it's no more apparently, current set up is A9? Anyone still use it?

I've gotten away with no youtube for a long time but my son now has limited access to it for info he needs on his newest obsession. Any particular channels I should be looking out for?
