Stag in Newcastle

    Hi all,

I am starting to look into organizing my brother's stag - he has a preference for Newcastle if in UK. Does anyone have any experience being part of a stag over there and if so, what did you think and would you have any recommendations of what to do, and what not to do in terms of socializing and activities?

I'm thinking of organizing myself, but I those stag planning websites do take a lot of the stress out of it, but they are probably quite expensive

We'll prob be looking at approx. 20 people heading over next Summer

    Many thanks!

It's a great spot! Was there on a Stag in October. There were loads of Stag and Hen parties there and the city seems to welcome them with open arms. There was never a hint of trouble either.

Stay away from Tiger Tiger if it is still open

Cracking city by all accounts and should be nice and cheap as well. Great shout.

20 people, could ye not book a few flats on Airbnb or a hotel or something and then look into some group activities?

Went there on a stage myself a couple of years - my first one attended actually. Have been to the city 3 of 4 times. Very good for going out.

Very easy to get into the city because of the direct train line from airport to city centre. Couple of pounds for a ticket.

The Gate is very handy for drinks / food, especially for stags. Tiger Tiger was grand I thought. Was near 30 lads on said stag, and we all got in there together so that's always a plus point.

If you want something a bit more high-end, go to The Jesmond during the day/evening but into the city at night time as it closes earlier due to it being a residential area.

As for accom - airbnb an apartment maybe? or booking.com Jurys is in an ideal situation in the city but expensive. I know Liverpool have big 20man apartments that can be rented out for Stags (called LIVING L3 apartments, some come with a bar), perhaps Newcastle has the same.

Exactly as above. City centre has lots of trendy bars and clubs (think Geordie Shore) and Jesmond has some more up market places. Osbourne road is a strip with a load of nice bars and restaurants and it's on the metro from the city centre. It has go carting, paintball, Viking Roman and Saxon history and parts of Hadrian's Wall, Newcastle Utd football, Falcons rugby. City centre has all sorts of bars including bars with table service if you're into that type of thing and had a dingy Irish cultural centre in Chinatown - where else would it be? It has strip clubs and knocking shops if that's what you're after.

Flights from Dublin go morning and evening with Ryanair and aerlingus and they're fairly cheap if you book in advance. Flights on Thursday night and Monday morning are usually very cheap.

They're full of stags and hens so it's fairly friendly to those kinds of big groups. As long as you don't look for trouble you're unlikely to find it.
In short, it's an ideal place for stags, particularly if you want an up-tempo weekend. It's north East England so it's relatively cheap for accommodation, taxis, food and booze but the trendy places are more expensive as you would expect.

Newcastle is super for a stag

We all stayed in the eurohostel - dont let the word "hostel" put you off checkin it out - we booked 8 man rooms - very clean and they had 2 private toilets / showers per room. It was the best craic of any stag ive been on - the banter in the rooms was great.

We started off in a bar called Cosey Joes on the saturday night. Friendly crowd and good atmosphere. Ended up in a nightclub called riverside then a casino in the gate complex.

Newcastle is a super choice for a stag

We went to a Newcastle United game , we were out on the beer before and after, the city is electric on a match day

We stayed in jury's I think it was reasonable enough, drink and food prices are reasonable too , enjoy

Newcastle locals are a friendly bunch too. Had a good laugh and ended up boozing with randomers I met on the street after being separated from friends.

OP don't waste your money on those stag planning sites.
Very easy to do it all yourself.

Get flights and hotels for less than €150 for 2 nights. Add in cheap drink and you would be hard pressed to do 2 nights in Ireland cheaper.
One downside to Newcastle is the flight times aren't great.

Not a million miles away, but went on a stag in Liverpool. Mate was into the darts, so went to the PDC championship over there. Maybe check what events are happening in Newcastle that your brother likes.

Other thing; get a large apartment that can house all of you. It'll allow you to pre-drink a lot easier, and easier to see that everyone has made it back after the night out easier. Liverpool pubs had some all night clubs, so something to keep in mind.

It will also allow you to do one big shop that will feed ye all in the mornings cheaply.

    Great city, book with confidence.

People very friendly, plenty of good bars and eateries.

    You'll have a ball.

No real need to go shopping is there. Get a fry in a greasy spoon for about 4 quid.

Never been there on a stag but have been to the Northumberland Plate and I gather the Ladies Day is a pretty big day there as well. Great craic.

If you're into drinking beer & gambling the races are hard to beat!

Have socialised a bit in Newcastle - absolutely cracking city for a stag.

The last stag I went to there we didn't even book a hotel! Just arrived and flew back the next day.

If the timing allows, a footie match in St James' is an experience!

The Bigg Market on a night out is like Temple Bar on steroids without the rip off prices, whereas the Quayside is a bit more refined.....

.....but watch out from them Geordie lasses :D

not sure on this - personally the last thing i wana do is shop or sit in a flat/hotel room when im on a stag

fry ups and fast food is cheap enough

I always pre-drink at home - can save half the cost of a night out - but a lot of the craic on a stag is crawlin the different bars with the group - can get a carry out in someones house at home any weekend

I always prefer a hotel for a stag. Getting a large apartment can get messy, some lads up at the crack of dawn and others wanting a decent kip.
Twin rooms be cheap enough in the city centre and food/drink isn't expensive.

You will get a fry somewhere for about £3. No point in cooking imo.

If they're going to Newcastle, the only thing they need to know is Greggs......top scran!!!

There's great soakage in their pasties and nothing like a jumbo sausage roll to chase away a hangover!

I would never associate the words 'Greggs and top scran' together. When you see the size of the average customer in a Gregg's all will become clear.

Looking at going to Newcastle for my brother's stag also, we would have to fly from Dublin on the Friday morning but the Sunday morning flight time is a bit of an issue and the night flight doesn't get in till nearly midnight and then we would have to travel back to Limerick.

I’m having the same problem...I think though rather than getting over and back with Ryanair, the flight time back with airlngus is a little better

Thanks everyone for the feedback! I found a spot that has the accommodation I need for about 80 pounds for two nights. Flights over are fine but need to come back on Sunday noon time but that’s not the end of the world...will need time to become human again anyway :-)

Yep, been there for a stag too, no issues, avoid the drink deals though, the vodka is like paint stripper.
It's great not having to worry about breaking up into smaller groups too. Obviously not all places are stag and hen friendly but the majority are.

Heading over on may bank holiday for a stag, were all in our 30s, would welcome a suggested pub crawl

You may prefer the Jesmond area then. Nice, well kept bars there. It's a taxi away from the city centre (5-10 mins) but not much each when there's a group. It's more an evening type area as it has to close early (11 or 12 if I remember correctly) but given the age-profile, ye might like it for a few hours.

Depends what you want. You could Google the Geordie Shore pubs and do a crawl of them. They're all within 5mins walk if each other in Bigg Market Square. Blackie Boy, Filthy's, etc then Tup Tup nightclub to finish. All the pubs in that area are pretty much the same - young, up for it, 'avin it large.

Or if you want more middle class pub crawl there's the Osborne Road in Jesmond. It's 20 mins walk from city centre or 5 mins on the metro.

Which do you think you'd be more interested in?

Hey, I'm sorry I'll go back to PMs now - got sorted, paid the deposit. Seems like a decent spot close to city centre

I've replied back now but nothing is showing up in my Sent folder so just to be sure here is the info - let me know if you need anything else

www.eurohostels.co.uk (go to the Newcastle link)

Very helpful communication from this crowd so far, they know we are a stag. There is a 30 pound charge that everyone needs to pay upfront for deposit etc that you get back on checking out (assuming the place isn't damaged, etc)

Booked a couple of 4 bed rooms and 6 bed rooms - you need to pay a 12% deposit within a week of booking and then the remainder 30 days before arrival. Seems like a decent spot, rooms look clean (as clean as a hostel can be) and really close to centre. There is a pub in the building too.

Worked out about €90 each for two nights (that included the rest of the group covering the accommodation cost for the groom)

Yeah I got the pm, cheers checked for July is coming in at 160 pounds per night , that's the rate no matter what room so you'd want to be 4 in a room, price wise is not far off hotel prices but at least they know ye are a stag do no issue there

Email them too though, you never know - a better price may be quoted through mail

Can anyone recommend a pub/club similar to coppers, i.e. one that will entertain 7 drunk lads on a stag. Im seeing mixed review on the bars in Bigg Market, has anyone any experience here?

    Cheers

This place was a highlight for me on a newcastle stag

    http://www.cosyjoes.co.uk/

great atmosphere - no hassle at the door for groups of lads

    popular with hens too
