'08 B6 VW Passat DPF and limp home mode

    I'm in Ballybrack and looking for someone to scan my 2008 Passat. I have a DPF which won't clear and as of last week also have an engine warning light and am in limp home mode.

    My engine is also normally quite clean but now has a very evident 'spray' of oil at the point marked in the photo

    What is the valve that is over the alternator?
    I have already had it to a local guy who plugged it in to a snapon code reader but couldnt find anything up with it. he was too busy to poke around and didn't seem interested.

    That is the diaphragm for the inlet manifold flaps. A solenoid will actuate that in order to change the speed of airflow into the engine.

    So am I right in saying that there is probably a leak in the inlet manifold.

    I'm hoping that a replacement to the solenoid and the actuator will solve my Engine Light & Long term DPF problems.

    Has anyone any experience of this?

    Have you read the faults? The car won't regen if there is any permanent faults stored so fixing this and clearing the light is a good first step, then hopefully the DPD isn't over full.

    I haven't read the faults.. there's a non dealership VW guy taking it tomorrow for me.

    Plastic swirl flaps in the Plastic inlet manifold I will bet are totally goosed. This leads to inherent DPF problems.

    I had weekly DPF light on with a PD170 engine. (similar to yours) Spotted the Inlet Manifold worry with these engines over on Briskoda forum. Checked it out sure enough mine was totaled. Replaced with a PD140 aluminium inlet as advised, also available here https://www.darksidedevelopments.co.uk/products/ppd170-used-bkd-aluminium-inlet-manifold-conversion-kit.html

    Guess what. Never seen the DPF light since, and that was nearly two years ago now.

    Wow - I'm sure the mechanic looking at it tomorrow will suggest replacement VW parts.

    You will need to clear the DPF light and limp home mode first to ensure clean slate before you tackle this job. The limp home mode is triggered by a full DPF unable to clear itself. Usually the fault (limp mode) needs to be cleared by VCDS, then you need a drive out, find a stretch of road(motorway) and in 4th gear and hold between 2500-3000rpm until it regens, clears itself.

    Manifold swapped, EGR Valve de-gunked. Already it moves through gears 1, 2 and 3 much more smoothly since the manifold change and egr clean, it was totally blocked. What a crappy design!

    Next job is to do a forced DPF regen using VCDS on a motorway trip this afternoon.

    This is my last throw of the dice!

    Keep us posted on the DPF light if it appears. Glad its going well so far. How were the swirl flaps? Existent or not?

    Also I find ours really susceptible to different fuel types. It hates Maxol Diesel but Esso for some reason runs a dream.

    My swirl flaps were there but in bits.. also there was evident leakage through the activator area. I have had two engine light activations since but only for EGR problems... I actually broke the clips on the wiring terminals on the EGR so had to do a temp -insulation tape repair job to keep them from popping out. I have never driven the car like this - when we bought it it must have been only working at 60~70 % of it's potential.



    Did you find you had any difficulty removing the oil filter subsequently? There seems to be extra flange that I was actually going to grind off where the EGR bolts on to it.
