Starter motor Nissan Micra

    Hello,

When I try to start the car there is just a continuous clicking sound.

I thought the battery was dead. Tried to start it with jump leads but this did not work. A push start worked. I drove around for an hour to charge the battery a bit.

Next day, car did not start. Same clicking sound. Googling this issue points to the starter motor being faulty.

I cannot drive the car to a garage.

I contacted a mobile mechanic who quoted 280 for parts, labour and call out. They come to me and fix the car on the spot. Unclear if they will repair or replace starter motor. Unclear if they replace with new or used starter motor.

Is this a reasonable price? I have not had this issue and I’m unsure. I don’t want to get overpay because I’m new to this. Other threads on boards say 200 - 900 but this is a huge gap and difference.

Thanks in advanced for information / advice.

€280 for parts, labour and callout fee seems fair for a small car tbh. Generally with starters they will supply a refurbished part.

Thank you! Will a refurbished part be ok?

This may be a stupid question but should I just trust this process? They come to me, they fix the car? I just googled them and it all looks good but should I be aware of something? If they ask for keys etc? Never done anything like this... they probably done want this old thing but still. I just don’t know what to look out for.

I assume if they are advertising a mobile service that they will do it on your driveway. They'll need the key.

I don't know how you'd verify their legitimacy really. See so they arrive in a professional looking vehicle, do they have a landline phone number etc.

The only thing is do is ask them to double check your battery. If you are using a low quality set of jump leads the car still may not start when trying to jump start it. If it is the starter a reconditioned unit should be fine and will come with a warranty.
