So I am going to have a look at some EVs with the old man this morning. He is itching to change his 152 Yeti.

Plan is to go to Airside for a look.

What is available to see right now?

I am hoping Leaf 2018 might be available to see.

Ioniq will be there....eGolf....but is there anything else that can be seen today?

He does very small mileage, under 10k per year, but he lives in an apartment so he wants a decent battery, as he wants to plug in as little as possible.

The i3 is out. He doesn't like the look of it, but I will try get him to actually look at it.

Renault Zoe? Very small and expensive, for what you get, though.

Haven't heard of any actual cars in dealers yet.

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

Not so sure about recommending he'd buy an EV without home charging. And he's probably unlikely to ever want to move again, so in his current place he most likely will never have home charging. I know if he gets a 200km range car, he'd only have to charge once a week, but it still could be a bit of hassle with the fast chargers getting busier and sometimes broken

But by all means let him test drive some to see if he likes them :)

So there is no Leaf 2 to show until February.

The mention of EV in Hyundai turned a switch with the hyundai rep. He became unresponsive and looked confused.

The Kia rep was high on Diesel. "everything is diesel" he said. No EV until at least the end of next year. He didn't even know there was a Soul EV.

He is looking for a big SUV. So he likes the Kodiaq and the Xtrail. Outlander PHEV is a potential runner, which is what I would pick, because it can be driven in EV and would give him enough battery power to get to/from work. If only he could even get a 13A socket in the underground.

Overall a pretty disappointing day. Go look for a diesel and they are all over you like flies on shiite.

Does he have a charging space ? if so get him to have a chat with the management agency, usually they won't have an issue with the charge point installation, it's the issue of billing that's the problem because usually you can't connect back to your own meter but check out if this can be done and there should be no real issue.

The I3 boot is small and might not suit him but with a decent spec it's a lovely place to sit.

He'd be far better of waiting to see the Leaf and seeing what range it can actually get but there should be faster charging electrics due sometime in 2018, leaf 2018 appears to be handicapped to 50 odd Kw.

    SNIP

It's an under ground car park. No designated spot, but that could probably be arranged. His apartment is on the first floor and when you look over the rear balcony you can see down through grills into the carpark right where he usually parks. If I were him, I would run an extension down over the balcony :D

    Good post

Its pretty much my feelings on the EV situation too, disapointment

Like your dad I would love an EV but the choice is so poor right now its ridiculous

If Elon Musk leaves Tesla and it goes under, it's over for a decade

Your dad is right to stick with ICE for next while too but maybe get a petrol hybrid for the milage he does

Disappointing. Sounds similar to the results of a large mystery shopper survey in the US recently: Study says dealers are ill prepared for the coming wave of electric cars

If the meters are also down in the basement then it may be feasible to get a charger installed. It would be interesting to know if anyone else living in an apartment has had luck getting a charger put in.

I think I'm very lucky in that I'm in an apartment, but with an allocated underground space adjacent to my own storage unit - which already had 2x 13A sockets in it that appear to be connected to my meter (my bills went up since I got the PHEV anyway).

    .

The meters are indeed in the carpark. I doubt it's something he will chase up though. My Dad isn't very proactive with most things, so I am afraid he will do not so much as ask the management company about an allocated space, let alone an EVSE.

AS EVs become more common, we will see progress for apartment dwellers.

I wouldn't get my hopes up.

I'd say the only hope will be public charging for apartment owners and people renting.
