Hi all, need your help. 2 year old dog is on a shop grain free food, protein 50%.
We put her on this fir skin issues & it worked perfectly but lately she has being 5 poos a day, one of which is diarrohea & she's scooting @ chewing her bum.She has had to have her anal glands emptied twice in 5 weeks. (Apologies if TMI!) Vet said to increase her fibre which I did by adding phyllium husk but she farted terribly , would clear a room & had no benefit on her poos or scooting. We are in midst of changing her to Happy Dog food & she's farting excessively , stomach making noises . Should I continue with the happy dog food , we only started on Tuesday. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

I dont have any advice on feeding dry food as we feed our Westies Raw.

This cleared up skin issues one of ours had before.

Have you tried a probiotic to help settle her tummy?

What food was the dog on before? Did you change straight over or are you adding in the new food gradually? You may need to slow down the changeover if it's affecting the dog. You will need six weeks or so on the new food to see if it suits. If not, try something different at that stage.

Purizon wasn't suiting my Sheltie as it was giving him runny poos so I changed to acana.

No the vet seemed to think it was the food that was causing the upset , & to sort that & her tummy would settle then !

Is her wormer up to date? And do you rotate to include something to cover various types of worms/get a worm count?

It'd just be my first thought with scooting (aside from anal glands).

Ignore if you've already considered - I'd say your vets already all over that!

Adding fibre will likely cause more pooping
How often are you feeding? Not unusual to go poo poo shortly after feeding.

Change of food needs time to adjust to, also changes in environment can have an effect on toilet times
Also is she indicating she needs to poo i.e. needs to go to the garden - maybe an allergy to something in the food..(edit or intolerance)

You have a few options... Keep doing what you're doing and hope for the best.. Add a probotic too for good luck or even the likes of a splash of Kefir from the Polish section in Tescos/a polish super market. Or you could ditch the dry food altogether for the time being and make up something easy to digest like cooked turkey/white fish and potatoes/or be lazy and buy the likes of Rocco Sensible from zooplus just to allow her tummy to settle then transition to the new dry food. Or you might find that you'd rather keep her on home prepared/Rocco.. Bear in mind chicken and beef can cause problems so possibly you need to go for one of the happy dog varieties with a novel protein.. I fed one with ostrich for a while lol as well as the cereal free james well beloved before switching to raw and haven't looked back.

so to summarise OP, the dog is pooping x5 times/day and has had its gland emptied twice/5 weeks. This started up while she was on her old food which suited her just fine, then this issue suddenly flared up?

The vet recommended a change of food to include more fibre? Phy. husks?

Now after 3-4 days on Happy Dog food and dog is farting excessively, diarrhea and tummy rumbling.

The vet thought her problem was with the food? did the vet check for any tummy problems? How is the dog now?

If one of my dogs was pooping five times/day, I would put her on a gentle diet of boiled chicken/rice or white fish/rice (if u know its intolerant of chicken) or maybe scrambled eggs - small meals. Make sure its drinking plenty (I home cook for my dogs, find it helps with any skin issues where food is the cuase) If the poop didnt clear up after a 2-3 days I'd be going back to the vet (or another vet) to find out whats going on.

For the anal glands raw chicken wings (depending on breed/size) are excellent - great 'treats' and really do the job.
