Upgrading to full frame for sports photography

Looking for some advice on a camera upgrade, I'm fairly conflicted and still fairly inexperienced but I'm really enjoying sports photography.

    Currently I'm shooting strictly football (soccer) with a Canon 7D Mark 2, I have the non-IS 300mm F2.8 and 70-200mm F2.8 with IS lenses.

I am looking to get a second camera now. I'm thinking seriously about purchasing my first full-frame camera, but I'm not sure what would be more appropriate, just purchasing a second Canon 7D Mark 2 or maybe going for a Canon 6D Mark 2.

I can't afford a 1DX, so if I was going full frame, I'd probably be realistically going for something like a Canon 5D or Canon 6D.

I guess you are well aware you will lose a lot of reach with your current lenses? Which might be important with sport??

I've a full frame camera and almost all my lenses are primes. I've often consider picking up a second camera (1.6 crop) just to give myself a "different" range of lenses (I know there are convertors)....

Yeah I'm aware, thanks, however I thought that would be acceptable with the better quality photos that the full frame would produce. Also I have become better at filling the frame having practised a lot, covering games over the last year or so.

I picked up a Canon 1.4 converter a few months ago but I didn't really enjoy good results with it on my Canon 7D Mark 2 and 300mm F2.8 prime, to be fair, it's quite an old lens. I struggled for focus and when I got it, the pics were quite grainy unfortunately.

Is there a new 7d due next year? Might be worth waiting for, the 6d would be a good bit slower

I currently use the 5D Mk3 for sports (use a 70-200 & a 300 F4), I also have a 7D Mk1. When I moved from the 7D1 to the 5D3 the drop from 8 to 6 fps was really noticeable, coming down from the 7D2 I would imagine that the drop would be even more noticeable.

Realistically how much are you looking to spend, Second hand 1Dx prices have taken a drop recently, I even saw two of them in sub 2K recently but there were well used, with bit of hunting you may find a nice enough one for not much more than a new 6D2

What do you make of it?

Realistically I'd say around €2,000, give or take.

Where have you seen those? I have seen nothing on adverts for 1DXs at all.

There are two here, Wex dont ship direct so you would need parcel motel or similar for delivery.

I really like the 5D3 and I get some really nice results with it. I keep thinking I should replace my 7D1 with a 7D2 as my main action camera. The reason I use the 5d3 so much is the vastly improved auto focus system over the 7D1, so even with the slower frame rate I get much more keepers and I believe that the 7D2 is better again than the 5D3 in terms of auto focus.

My current thinking is along the lines of the 300 on the 7D for reach and the 70-200 on the 5D for closer work.
I plan to hold off until march and see what the rumored 7D3 might bring to the table and either go with a 7D3 or avail of the slightly cheaper second hand 7D2

Thanks for the recommendation. Wow... those 1DX's have 392,000 and 319,000 and shutter counts. I think the shutter life is around 400,000 for a 1DX? You would be taking a bit of a gamble there?

Well I did say they were well used :D

My point was that prices have dropped and for a bit more than a new 6D you might be able to find one in decent condition. If you were seriously considering one of those the first thing I would do is contact canon and ask how much would a shutter replacement cost. I believe the repair agent in Ireland is Image Supply Systems in Dublin.

I sold a brace of 7D MKII's and moved to the 5 DMKIII's. Initially, I regretted it. I really noticed the loss of fps but after adjusting the size of my RAW files, it all evened out. Photographers said I would miss the file size, but they were wrong because once I download the originals, the next thing I do is reduce the size of the files before working on them.

This outfit are Chinese but ship from Ireland: OOPS! I'm a new user so can't add URL's, message me if you want a link :)
