I've been with Vodafone broadband and phone for several years and generally very happy with the service. Even been upgraded to fiber in recent years. However following their most recent price hike, it's gone up to €50, I decided to shop around.

Eir currently have a deal from as little as €35 per month for same if not better product.

However I'm finding this switching process to be quite tricky. For example, if I take up the offer with Eir today, they say they can have me changed over within a week.

Eir will notify Vodafone (presumably in the coming days) that I am changing provider. Vodafone then require 30 days notice before they terminate my contract. Vodafone are paid in advance, ie, I have paid for their services for the month of December already, but the 30 days will probably just run into January, thus I will also be billed for the entire month of January.

To sum up, I will have to pay Eir from when they connect me up next week, and also vodafone until the end of January. That's almost 2 months where I have to pay 2 isps. I'm sorry if this makes no sense as it's hard to explain.

I hope I have this wrong. Perhaps someone who has been through the procedure or something similar could enlighten me.

btw... I am not in any contract with Vodafone or anything.

I did similar recently, moved from Vodafone to Virgin Media.
First, get commitment from Eir that they will change you over in time. That is, within 30 days of Vodafone's price change email to you. Otherwise, check with Vodafone to ensure that you are not still in contract.
After the changeover is done, ring 1907 for Vodafone cancellations, get them to confirm that the service is cancelled.
    Belt and braces!

    We are moving soon.
If you are not in contract with V. why do you have to pay them an extra month?
If you will be with Eir from, say, Jan1, cancel your bank dd/so to V at the end of Dec.

    thanks for yer replies.
I am out of contract with Vodafone, that's not a problem, but apparently, even at that, they still require 30 days notice. Here's a direct quote from one of their agents on their support forum when I queried the final payment issue...

As you are required to provide Vodafone with 30 days’ notice if you wish to cancel your service, If you request to have your existing service moved over to Eir, Eir would need to submit this request on your behalf, once submitted, Vodafone will be alerted that you're leaving the network and will proceed with issuing you with your final bill 30 days later. As you pay in advance for the cost of your monthly package plan, if you begin a new billing period while this notice period is pending, you will receive one final bill for the full cost of your monthly package plus any additional usage charges for the month previous.

Not very clear I know, but it seems if I was to ring vodafone right now and cancel, they won't cut me off until 3 January 2017 (30 days from now). There is a bill going to come to me in the next few days for €50 for their services for December, but I'll also get a bill in January for €50 because my contract will have rolled into January by a few days.

    Just doesn't seem right.

Can you remember andublin how Vodafone billed you from the time you rang them and cancelled your contract?
