The Rise Of Eastern European and Central Asian Pro Boxers

One of the more pleasing trends for me in recent years is the rise of top notch Eastern Euro/Central Asian pro boxers. The "Great White Hope" BS that used to be common in the media is now rarely mentioned with the 10+year long dominance of the Klitschko brothers. Many members of the great Ukrainian teams of recent Olympics have gone pro with the likes of Gvozdyk, Usyk and Lomachenko being amongst the very best in the sport.

Even in younger countries like Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan you are seeing a lot of promising fighters in the amateurs and hopefully more in the pros. The quality of some of the domestic fighters on Russian cards is quite impressive too. It seems like the national scene there is becoming strong.

I find it quite pleasing and it's great to see that other markets are emerging and the boxing scene has and is becoming more global. The great European-Americans boxers of the past, particularly Italian-Americans may be absent but there is some impressive European boxers to fill that void. I wonder how different the history of boxing would be if boxers from the old communist countries had gone pro over the decades. Might be quite different.

Here's to you my Slavic friends!
