Hi, I'm looking to get my 14yr old son a cheap laptop for Christmas, he'll be using it for school work and games like roblox and minecraft. I find with most of the budget laptops they have something called 32gb and 64gb eMMc storage.. Could anybody explain to me what this means? Surely he wouldn't be able to download all that much with such little storage?
I'm not that good with this sort of thing so would appreciate feedback or suggestions. Thanks in advance

It can be Ok if on a budget. Would go for 64gb as opposed to 32gb if you're going to be installing anything of significant size. Have heard stories of Windows not being able to update on a 32gb sure to lack of space. You can also add a memory card. The memory card access would be slower but ok for docs, video files or music. Wouldn't recommend installing programs on a memory card.

What you're calling budget laptops I would probably call wastes of money. The stuff down at €200-240 range isnt really worth it. Minimum spend is around €380 for a basic Word/Chrome flingabout.

If this is above your level, look at Dell Outlet, you can get €500 B stock for about %50 off and generally the condition is still very good (latest one was down and dent and scratch, not a mark on her!).

Thanks... I have been looking at getting a refurbished one. I've been looking on amazon as I will be going home to Jersey for Christmas so will get it sent there and will also get the VAT knocked off. Some of them have great reviews... I just need to do my research and know what to look out for. I'm contemplating this one here... What do you think?

that would be suitable for very basic stuff - simple web browsing (few tabs only).
no games really - could even struggle with minecraft due to the old and slow CPU which has a passmark benchmark test score of 1600. for reference new i3 would be over 3000, the newest i5 over 7000.
but other than that - not terrible for the price. you're not going to get anything much for that price.

Thanks for that. There seem to be a few others there on Amazon. I'm just not sure what I need to be looking for to be honest. Without sounding like a scrooge here, I can't justify spending more than 300 euro on a Christmas present for a 14 year old to be honest. So I may have to get him to reconsider his Santy list :/

How about this one? It has the corei5 you were talking about https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01C6WNC86/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A1CSPH6UNIUWE0&psc=1

That's a 6 or 7 year old laptop. Not worth it.

Just stretch a little more and get something like this. Well worth it, anything less is compromising somewhere if you want to play even basic games.

Avoid the resellers on Amazon , groupon etc. If you check authorised resellers there is still some value out there.

Personally i have used mcscom.co.uk for dell laptops for both business use and family.

The dell refurbished units can actually be brand new and all dell units ship in dell boxes which is nice especially if a gift.

At your pricepoint take a look at the vostro range and you should pick up a an i3 or i5 processor 4th generation upwards with 8gb ram and 500gb hdd and also importantly if gaming is a priority a dedicated video card
Where you are probably going to lose out is screen quality but at your budget there will be compromises.

In your position i would look at one of the 5470's at £216+VAT

Alternatively you can also have a look at refurbished units from xsonly but mainly consumer level lenovos available in your budget
