So, a young teenager in the family has asked Santa to go halfs with her on a surface pro or similar. Its obviously very expensive and hanging in the balance at the moment. Does anyone know or can recommend a cheaper good alternative, or are you better off spending the money on something like the surface pro?

It's a bit of a hard one to answer. It all depends on what she wants the Surface Pro for. If the pen input/tablet element is a big draw then you might struggle to find a computer that matches the Surface.

I know Lenovo have some more reasonable options the Miix 700:

The spec isn't too fantastic, 4GB RAM, core M5 processor and 128GB of storage. The processor is a bit on the old side too. Also worth mentioning that the pen is an extra that needs to be bought. Although I think the surface is the same.

Asus T304 basically ripped off the Surface design at a far cheaper price. Keyboard included (it's about €150 extra for the Surface one) and pen as well.

    Here's an i5/8/128 @899. http://www.harveynorman.ie/computing/laptops/asus-t304ua-12.6-core-i5-8gb-128gb.html

    what is your max budget?

there are alternatives of various prices - obviously the more expensive ones are closer to the surface experience.

SP1 and SP2 had their niggles, SP3 got it very right though. With the SP4 now out the SP3 i5/8GB unit is worth buying.

Remember, the specs are not upgradeable. The 4GB models are like ferraris with a 20kph speed limit. Total false economy.
