Neighbour removed boundary hedge and fence without permission

My neighbour recently removed both the fence and hedge which separated our properties at the front of the houses. The structure consisted of a fence which was surrounded by a hedge with roots on both sides of the boundary. The work began unannounced and there was no attempt was made to inform us of their plans to remove the hedge and fence, which have been present since before they moved in next
    door.

Due to prior arguments and similar behaviour on their part (they also demolished a wall which separated the back gardens, again on which was on both sides of the property and again without permission) we do not communicate. When confronted he simply filmed me with his phone and ignored everything I said.

This is obviously a cause of great concern because they have demonstrated a complete disregard for our property and the boundaries. I am wondering what can be done to resolve this situation, and prevent further damage to existing hedges and boundaries.

The hedge had roots on both sides of the fence which runs the length of the boundary between the properties.

It's an old hedge typical of those in the cul-de-sac where I live, all of which were planted long before I moved in. It actually has multiple trunks from which the hedge grows, many of which are on my side of the fence, probably 50/50 between both properties.

Not sure it would. I get exactly what the OP is describing.

Might be unclear from my description, but the trunks are something like the picture below, with a number existing on both sides of the fence. Therefore the hedge has trunks on both sides but it was removed completely, along with the fence, without notification or consent.

Also might not be possible since said hedge is now removed.
I'd of been far more concerned about the back wall, might have to go see a solicitor.

Would the fence not normally mark the actual boundary?
Nothing stopping the neighbour removing the shrubs on his side, removing the fence should have involved consultation with you and agreement of a suitable replacement, removing shrubs on your side totally out of order, in my opinion.

Could you now build a wall and put up a fence on your side of the boundary?

Do you have the folio from the land registry?

When they moved in is irrelevant and the roots again probably irrelevant.

Who planted the hedge and who put up the fence.
Is the hedge planted on both sides of the fence?
Or was it planted on one side but has grown to both sides thus I would imagine hiding the fence completely?

You keep saying roots on your side which suggests the hedge was actually on their side?
