VW Golf 1.6 Diesel 161

Hi

I'm currently looking at getting a VW Golf 1.6 Diesel 161 reg.

There are a few I've looked at in main dealers recently - prices approx €20k - €20,500, with low enough miles.

Should I buy now or if I wait until the new year will there be much of a drop in price? Obviously the car would be considered a year older but I think they are good enough value as it is.

I would appreciate any thoughts on this, I'm not that experienced in buying cars!

Sorry forgot to add, the ones I've looked at are highline spec.

What type of driving do you and approx yearly km?
I wouldn't bother with the 1.6 being perfectly honest.

A mix between motorway and back roads.
What alternative would you suggest?

My missus does 1000km a week in a 1.6 162 and it does a very decent job of it to be fair, 60k kms on it and not a single issue so far.

The only thing i'd say is if you are in that price range, a 162 highline got a bit more spec as standard vs a 161. In the 162 you get 18's, keyless entry, app connect, rear LED's in addition to the 161.

Thanks for pointing that out re spec, didn't realise that. The only thing is there's not as many 162's around. Think I'll hold off until January anyway.

It might be my own personal preference tbh but if probably focus more on the 2.0 than the 1.6.
I've driven a few of those 1.6s as rentals and they frustrated me.
But you also have good stories like the one above.
Just something with a bit more go is better for me.
Even so a tsi golf could also be a good shout.

Yes, they really pushed the boat out with standard equipment on them before the facelift arrived. And if you have no trade-in I'd expect to negotiate something off that asking price.

Terrible spec on that car, Irish Mk7 Golfs from about 2015 onwards were better specced than their UK counterparts.
