Hi folks having a mare with cars at the minute. Had a 01 citroen xsara that calfed bought a 06 citroen C4 and that calfed after a month.

Car will be doing 6km a day school run then the mrs going to work and not used at weekends.

Budget is 5-6k but want to keep it down as i fear the second car is going to calf soon also.

I have looked at everything from 11 reg diesel astra to a 09 reg diesel insignia to a 09 reg fiesta to a 10 reg focus

Most important thing is reliability any tips on what direction to go in i suppose something german or japanese would be best for reliability

Stay away from German stuff if you want reliability. I'd definitely be giving a diesel Insignia a wide berth.

Sounds like a job for a petrol Corolla.

Jaysus you will know about having a mare if you buy an insignia or an astra, especially an insignia though. They are dreadful piles of dung.

As tfb says a petrol corolla would be your best option or an auris.

Love of God don't get a diesel.
If all youre doing is say 20km a day with a work commute then I'd also go with a prius.
    Anything petrol anyway.

Do you mean 6km round trip 5 days a week, or 6km each way? Even if it's each way you'd only do max (6_km)*(2_way)*(5_days)*(52_weeks) or 3120 km per year, under 2k miles.

Fuel economy is basically irrelevant. Say you had a fairly heavy beast running 12l/100km (24mpg avg), you'd spend (3120 km)/(100 km)*(12l)= 374l of fuel in a year. Which is €500 at today's prices (€1.34/l).

So I'd say you basically want a cheap (buying/taxing) reliable petrol car. A hybrid would be great: refined, automatic, modern, etc., ... But I don't see you getting the full value out of it and you say you want to keep money back.No car, even a hybrid, can run on less than zero fuel, and I don't imagine you'll get worse than 24 mpg, so the most it could possibly save you is €500 annually.

If it was me, for that use-case I'd start looking at a clean well kept Punto (a make I've had in the past), or I'd start looking into Japanese stuff like Yaris/Corolla (which I haven't had yet, but by all accounts if you get the right one you can be driving it for a lifetime at your wife's mileage)
