10a fuse blowing

    Hi,

I have an issue with the headlight adjustment control in our car. Fuse keeps blowing shortly after replacement. The adjustment will work for a while and then stop. It's not an immediate blow out of the fuse.

I've replaced the thumb wheel in the car with a refurbished part and also replaced the headlight units on the car with refurbished headlights (this was much needed anyway - think the previous owner fitted some Chinese aftermarket parts.. absolute junk). Massive light improvement. The motors for adjustment are within the headlight enclosures.

Sad thing is the adjustment still stops working eventually after a short while.

I know which fuse it is obviously but is there a way to see if there are other components attached to the fuse? is it a single purpose fuse it multi function? I mean specifically for our car and not speaking in general.

It's a golf MKV of which there are a myriad of versions and optional extras so one diagram for one car may not represent our car.

If it is a single purpose fuse then I could do enough to get them to level zero and then let the fuse blow. The lights are manually adjustable from that point..

I just want to know whether there are other components important to the function of the car that are not working because of this fuse being blown.

Nothing alerts on the dash when it is blown.

    what car? Year/engine?

    2007 Golf 1.4 16v

Bit more on this - last night I had a brainwave to see what would happen if I replaced the fuse and tried adjusting the lights without the engine running..

Was able to move the lights up and down multiple times with no issue and no blown/melted fuse.

Zeroed the lights, removed the still not blown fuse and then manually adjusted them. So at least my lights are as they should be.

But now I'm fairly certain that it's a multi function fuse and it's something else that's blowing the fuse when the car is running. It is fuse position one on the driver side fuse board.

What else doesn't work after the fuse blows?

I honestly can't tell. It's nothing obvious. That's why I was looking for the specific information about the fuses in our car.

    Which position fuse is it?

I have a 07 mkV Golf myself, my book is telling me that 'headlight range control' is a mini-fuse either in position #1 or position #15 if you have the Golf Plus. Is the fuse that is blowing either of these?

If it is there doesn't seem to be anything else wired through those fuses, they're for 'headlight distance control' alone & are not shared with anything else. My Golf is a different spec to yours & doesn't have any headlight adjustment so I can't pull that fuse & see if anything else isn't working but I'm pretty sure that fuse is only for headlight adjustment.

Edit: Sorry, just seeing this now. If it's only blowing the fuse when the engine is running you might have a problem with another circuit earthing through the headlight adjustment. Does it blow as soon as you start the engine?

    It's position one alright.

Maybe it's an intermittent short that I have.

If it's just the range control them I'm happy out. I've got the lights zeroed and level now so the range adjuster isn't really necessary.

I'm sure there's another fuse I can sacrifice to check :)

Fairly sure it's not immediate though. I've had the engine running before and seen the adjusters working. But they do fail after a while.

What I'd do is turn everything in the car off, replace the fuse with a fresh one then start the engine. Go through all your electronics one-by-one & see if the fuse blowing is triggered by another circuit.
    Who doesn't love a good puzzle! :D

Attached is Autodata's wiring diagram for a 2007 1.4 Golf with the BUD engine.

That fuse only powers the headlight motors and position switch.

You need to check for shorts.

Maybe it's possible to disconnect each side in turn and test. It might narrow the search. Then are the motors interchangeable to test if the motor is faulty.
