i have an Almera 1.5, my son reported noises , several fast test drives showed up nom problems. then on a fifty mile run a noisy droning noise came, lasted a mile of two and went.
strange thing each bout of noise was triggered by my driving over the metal expandy thing on a motorway bridge.

    its not in the engine

to my mind leaves wheel bearings or gearbox

You should go back out and see if the noise is there when the car is in neutral, whether it's there when you dip the clutch etc.

Could be a wheel bearing or rear brake drum. See if any of the wheels is particularly hot.

Check the oil level in the gearbox, the smallest drop in the level and 5th gear runs dry with obvious consequences.
