Tuning problems

So before I splashed out on Virgin I hooked up my TV to the Virgin box on the wall and surprisingly it had TV3 , RTE and Channel 4 all with perfect picture and sound.

So being the optimist I did a retune to see if it would pick up anything more - I got about 20 channels but they all muffled sound (hissing with the actual sound not or barely audible) - this includes the three channels that were working perfectly initially.

What did I do and any clues on how to fix it ?
Secondly - how come I'm receiving these channels at all ?

    Thanks!

Well just to answer half my own question. Program edit had an option to change type from SC1 to SC2 and I now have perfect picture and sound on all channels.

Still curious how I'm getting them at all though!

I'd hoped to get the same but got nothing. Did you manual tune or Auto tune. i got a glimmer of picture once...

The Virgin Media cable network in Dublin continues to carry a number of channels in analogue format, unencrypted - https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=100641814#post100641814

Regarding the audio issues, analogue TV in these islands use/used Standard I while continental Europe mostly Standard B/G. Some TV select the wrong sound standard when doing an analogue scan. Is there an option to change the sound standard in the tuning menu?
