HDMI matrix

Not sure if this is the correct place for this type of query but I’ll ask anyway.
I have 6 hdmi sat boxes and 6 tvs, I was looking into purchasing a 6x6 or 8x8 matrix but they’re mad money so I thought I might to try to make my own using 6 4x1 splitters and 3 6x2 matrix units. I’m running into issues with it though, one is when I select the same sat box on say 5 tvs and I select a different sat box for the 6th tv; the 5 tvs ate fine but on the 6th one the picture is flashing on and off every 5-10 seconds. I knew there would be issues with it with the way hdmi works, now I’m not too familiar with the exact working of hdmi but I’m guessing there’s some kind of return on it that’s causing the interference. If I used active cables would that help?

Just to be clear, the set up I have is 6 sat boxes, each box has a cable going to a 4x1 splitter, which then has 3 cables coming from each splitter (18 hdmi cables!) which in in turn are plugged into 3 separate 6x2 matrix units that feed 6 tvs.

Any help would be most appreciated!!
