My brother is living in China and wants to send my son a birthday present. What would any issues with this be? Safety, customs etc? I sent him a package last year which didn't reach him.

It is a camera, worth around €300.

If it s a lithium ion battery, there will probably be issues shipping it.

I have never had an issue getting stuff which was sent from China, sending INTO china is a different matter, huge difficulties, like you found. They are very well known for it, and they were very simple things I was sending, no batteries.

Have you had lost packages sent from China before?

Even so I would be concerned about something of such high value. Is it a popular brand of camera? could he not just buy it from an EU store and have it sent to your house? Many will do gift wrapping, not revealing prices and having a personal message.

I think it is crazy what some people send these days, the postage for individuals can be huge compared to what companies pay. I see people sending the likes of cadbury bars & tayto to the US, it must cost an absolute fortune, and though these "ex-pat" shops can cost a lot they are probably a cheaper option.

I have been to China several times, and years ago you would be hounded to get stuff, or I would be getting great bargains myself, best was coincidentally on a canon camera. But those days are gone, these days with online buying and more globalization of prices the savings are not that much -if any. I have Chinese colleagues and they were offering to bring electronics over, presuming it had to be a lot cheaper, but I was able to buy it cheaper online, even with the international postage.

To send it properly via a courier company like DHL, UPS would be the way to go but with the cost involved and the risk of customs duty would it not be better to just order the same camera from an EU supplier to deliver it to him?

Thanks for the replies. I think between the two of us well have a look at possible EU sources. Even if it's a bit dearer it might be a lot less hassle.
