Driving test cancellation

So last Thursday I had my 2nd test in Skibbereen, failed in the first 5 minutes 😢. Got a grade 3 turning right. Gutted to say the least. I booked my 3rd test within the hour.
The waiting time is 5 months currently, it took 4 months for the first test and 5 months for the 2nd, even with a letter from my employer it did nothing.

I really need a full license at this point as I need to get my own car. I've rang up the past 4 days about a cancellation and emailed them to no avail so far, is there anything I can do to get a quick test? I'm fed up of the rediculus waiting times at this point.

I know you are eager to get it, but maybe you are jumping the gun a bit if you are about to sit your 3rd test. 5 months isnt much time and may save you more trouble in the long run (i.e. if you get a quick test, and fail again you will be in a worse situation).

Sorry if this sounds harsh and good luck.

Well the worst part is I had 5 grade 2s compared to 20 I had the first test. I would of passed otherwise. I've been driving for 16 months now and I'm just fed up of doing lessons and practicing and want to get it out the way.

I have got a test date for Dec 22. I want to cancel this and re-arrange. Has anyone any idea based on their own experience how many weeks ahead a re-arranged test will be?

Could you apply for test in different area , might be less waiting time.

How did you fail on turning right?

I don't know about your experience or circumstances but I do wonder if you can't just get a test elsewhere faster? I know that some drivers feel they must know all the routes to be comfortable. I don't know if that's the case with you but I've always maintained that if you have the skill and have an idea of tricky obstacles in an area, anyone should be fine. Maybe that's a consideration...

Well coming into skib the first turn right is a box junction. The cars coming from the left is a blind spot especially if there is illegally park cars in the way. I stopped when about to turn right, way was clear, proceeded to turn right then a car came flying from the left. It's literally a gamble turning right unfortunately.

Which is the closest centre to skibbereen?

I can drive relatively well but when it comes to the driving test I just blanked out on the 1st test and the nerves got to me the 2nd time too.
The first examiner I had wasn't interested and wasn't nice at all, unfortunately he's the main guy there.
The 2nd examiner I had was pretty good in fairness. I'd actually like to have him again cause I was able to relax more the 2nd time for most of the test but the first 5-10 minutes got to me.
I really wouldn't mind much at all failing twice if the waiting times weren't so long.

20 serious faults in your first test, 5 serious faults and 1 dangerous fault in your second.

I think you you should be more concerned about getting up to test standard and driving in a safe manner than how long the waiting list is.

No junction is ever a gamble.

Is their a wait period for reapplying for the test? I just reapplied and asked to he on the cancellation list.

You don't know me, you don't know how I drive. I'm not the only one who has failed twice, and I won't be the last. Like I said I can drive to a standard but under pressure such as the test I don't.
No junction is a gamble? What a load of rubbish, there is plenty in this country. Even if you creep out, skibbereen in this instance you'd be in the right lane.

20 grade 2s to 5 grade 2s is a big improvement in my eyes. Even the examiner said I drove well besides those mistakes.

No need to be an a**hole pal.

5 grade 2's is a pretty good result. When did you do your test. What do you know about the new system!

Boards really is a cess pit sometimes

    @ironictoaster

They don't take into account how many times you've done it unfortunately. In skib for instance is 5 months waiting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,091 ✭✭✭Rubberchikken

I agree Op that some junctions are a gamble. You've only to drive some rural roads to realise that. It may have been that the tester didn't feel you handled that particular junction well enough in the circumstances.
It is tough to fail and tougher still to fail twice but if a person learns from their failures then they have the opportunity to prove.

I'm guessing you have years of driving ahead of you so the advice to take things easy and use the time to the next test to get plenty of practice is meant well.
    Best of luck

Ring and ask to be on cancellation list. Might speed you up a bit

I did my 2nd test on the 16th. For the first test I failed on too much mirror use and slow progress, I kid you not. It does affect your test on who you get for it. The 2nd examiner was way nicer and actual took time to explain what I did wrong.

    @Rubber

Yeah it is what it is, can't change it now. Worst part is I knew I failed so I had to go through the whole test knowing it's pointless lol.
Thing is right now I don't have a car to drive any more so if it takes 5 months I'll be out of practice unless I get a few days of insurance to get back into it.

I agree, sometimes the best drivers fail these tests, it is often down to luck on the day, lucky to get a nice, pleasant examiner with a bit of basic cop on and not someone on a ego trip, lucky with the time you are allocated, lucky with the route you are taken and also lucky that nothing untoward happens the car during the journey. Hopefully, third time lucky for you, don't despair,

I was actually half way through a lesson in skibbereen one time and the fuel line connected to the fuel filter split leaving me stranded on the extrance to a roundabout. Lucky it wasn't during a test haha

Of course you drove well besides those mistakes, that stands to reason....and it's a good improvement, but there's no need to be rude to people here if you're looking for a bit of advice.

Given that you'll be without a car for a while, I'd seriously consider doing a few pre-test lessons as close to the next test as possible. There are lots of dangerous and difficult junctions around and what you need is a bit of practice so that you can negotiate the junction confidently. If you drive confidently, you'll impart that confidence to the examiner and that will do you no harm.

    Best of luck next time.

exaisle (failed first test, passed second test, two weeks later Sylvester Barrett gave out free licences to anybody on their second provisional licence....the fecker!)

I know of somebody (unfortunately now deceased) who gave a young fella a fiver to run out in front of him during his test....he jammed on the brakes missing the young lad (they had practiced!). The examiner turned white...told him that he'd performed an excellent emergency stop and to return to the test centre, that he'd passed his test.
I wouldn't, however, recommend that particular course of action....

    :-)

I'm not trying to be rude, I'm just stating it as it is.
To be honest it came down to the nerves, after the first 10 minutes I actually relaxed compared to blanking the entire first test.
I think I've done around 19 lessons, I don't remember the exact number. I'll probably book a lesson just before the next test.

If you can tell them you are willing to go at short notice (couple of days) to a cancellation in a number of centres it should reduce waiting times.
    Next time.

Just a quick update, I've rang them about 11 times the past week now to no avail, I'm probably wasting my breath. I can't really do the test anywhere besides skib cause anywhere else is too far.
Guess I'll be waiting another 5 months.. which is annoying since I know someone who failed on the same day and got a cancellation for 3 weeks away..

Don’t give up! I’m in the same boat, waiting on test number theee and also under pressure to get my license. If you ring every day to check you are bound to get a slot. People cancel their tests all the time! I got my last 2 tests by phoning up to check for cancellations, each one was about 10 days away.
Best of luck, third time lucky hopefully 😄

Thanks. How long did it take to get the tests from just ringing? It's quite busy in skibbereen so it's difficult to get one unfortunately.

Just an update, I finally passed it with only 1 grade 2. I'm really glad I don't have to do it again :)
