Install SSD in old Laptop worth doing?

I have a Dell Studio 1749 laptop with an old 500GB(5400rpm) drive

I scanned my laptop at crucial.com, it says I have
Storage: SATA 2 - 3Gb/s

Would I notice the upgrade with SATA 2 connection?

There is a spare hard drive bay on the Studio 1747 so I could just slot one in I believe with this hard drive caddy

I believe I need a SSD drive with a height of 9.5mm or less

This drive is 7cm x 10.1cm x 0.7cm, is the height in this case 0.7cm?

Yes you would benifit by switching to an SSD. You'll want to use it as the system drive and not the second drive. 2.5in drives are all the same size.

Thanks, might open up laptop and see if I can take out old drive and just slot in new SSD drive, might not need to buy caddy then.

I believe they do actually come a several thicknesses
edit: maybe I'm thinking of optical drives!

They do, some HDD come in around 9mm thick. A lot of ssds come with a spacer, so that it can't move inside the laptop if there is a gap

Ive put SSDs in older boxes before with SATA2 and even though the IOPs should help the slow as hell PCH meant negligible improvement.
