its a fairly big donkey of a machine with plenty of horsepower but how do big 2wds get on in the fields? They seem very popular in America but not here. How would it manage if you put a 14 tonne dumper behind it? What would it be equivilant in 4wd in terms of traction? Outpull a 4wd 390 off road or would the 4wd in the 390 beat it (obviously not in power but in terms of traction)?

With proper tyres it would chew up and spit out a 390 4wd off road. Had a 398 4wd years back, was a good tractor but not a world beater by any means, traction was ok but came to the end of it power wise quite quickly and the dry clutch was terrible.

well lets for the crack say the tw30 had a pair of new agrimax tyres n the back (standard size. nothing extra ordinary) what 4wd would it be roughly equivilant to for grip?

Depends on the terrain and circumstances I would think. Hard make a comparison, most smaller 4wd less than 100hp need front weights imo to get the full use of 4wd if there's much weight on the back.
For example, I'd rather a 390 in 2wd or 4wd than that tw for bog work.
For pulling a dump trailer or grain trailer on good flat ground then the tw all day

Hook the trailer on to the top link, like the frilly fringe lads.
The TW won't rear up too handy.

A well shod ford 7000 would give a 4x4 mf390 a right run for its money pulling on the road or in a field as long as conditions weren't scuttery.

At over 6 and a half ton and 180hp as long as ya kept the front wheels from dipping below the surface it'd take a horse of a modern 4wd tractor to out pull that tw30. Trying to spread slurry with it next spring would be an awkward task though...

What that yoke needs is a new owner with a passion for tractor runs and a farm of brilliant arable land (the likes ya see artics driving on).

very rare machine in 2wd this side of the pond. Very common in the states though, most have twins on the rear. I've liked the page facebook group "Blue Power Fanpage", most people on the page are in the US. Very few contractors over there, most people have all their own machinery, and its a lifetime investment. Lots of old machines earning their keep.

I know that 7700 and 8100s and like used to be highly regarded before for pulling with the right trailers(axel well back).she must have been some way usefull if she have 9000 hrs

I rarely use the 4wd on my TS115 in the field. Even when putting out slurry in the spring it might not always be on. I have dry land though. That said, it is useful to have when you need it, and I would be slow to bother with something like that.

I recall contracting family using a fleet of these Tw tractors here in north wexford. I think hindsight had shown them how troublesome and thirsty they were. Nostalgia skews the memory.
