My central heating circulating pump is making a whistling sound every now and then, its a Grundfos, my heating is a solid fuel stove and/or oil heating. Pump is 4/5 yrs old. when change the speed it stops, but starts again after a while. Would I be right in saying its a bearing problem and pump needs replacing ? Thanks for any replies.

Probably bearings, but all sorts of noises can occur in a heating system, so impossible to diagnose with any certainty at this remove.

just replaced the fecker, bearing or not. €120...could'a been worse, I'm away for the next 6 weeks so better to have a clear mind. Running now and silent, so presuming it was a bearing. I'll keep it and have a look at it when home again.

A thermostatic valve can cause a whistling sound. If it happens again, Try turning the valve where the sound is the loudest slightly - see if the sound changes - it might not be the pump. Mine often does that.
