T430 HDD replacement

Ok, I have decent Lenovo/IBM T430 laptop, about 12 months ago the HDD went bang. Completely gone and not a hope of saving. No issue as everything back up...

I have left it sitting for months and really should get it up and running.

I was thinking about getting an SSD but just wondering as I have the HDD caddy can I just buy any SSD and stick it into laptop? Or do I have to buy specific T430 one which seems to be selling for twice the cost?

    Thanks

you should be able to get a generic ssd.

install windows from a usb drive onto it.

Have you got a link to one that states that it's a T430 SSD? Any SSD should work, unless you've read they need to be specific.

They're cheap enough on Amazon. I'd go for as big as you can afford. You'll want at least 256GB.

I was looking at this type of one
    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/IBM-Lenovo-ThinkPad-T430-Hard-drive-120GB-SSD-SATA3-MLC/302369798795?epid=7004470013&hash=item4666a4fa8b:g:7Z8AAOSwlMFZMb0B

I have no idea if it needs to be specific. I was just wondering.

In reality the laptop will be used for web browsing and maybe some word processing. I couldn't even be bothered putting Windows on it. Will just stick on linux.

I got quote from local shop and they said to put in 500GB SATA drive and install Linux was 150 euro....that seems a bit high

make an effort and read up on it. you can do it cheaper by buying an ssd and may need a holder to hold the ssd in place. the ebay option is ok value but the ssd inside is probably the cheapest (maype not the best inside) out there.

if you're not comfortable doing in yourself pay the company in town.

That's just a regular SATA SSD. Very easy to replace. If just using if for what you said 128GB would be plenty.

I'd say do it yourself. Plenty of people on here will help you if stuck. I have an SSD as my main drive and replaced the disc drive with the HDD for extra storage.

    Here's one for £50.

This video will show you how to change it. You can take out current HDD to see if it matches the one in the video if you're not sure.

Edit: This is the same video as above.

I linked you that video already in my post and gave you another link on how to do it.

You're obviously not the most proactive type having left the item on a shelf for a year!

Thanks I missed your original post....very helpful I will read up now

It's called having a life as well....I don't have time to sit around all day trying to be a smart on a anonymouse forum....like I didn't have time to fix laptop...other things are a priority.....

I prefer to talk to people and if posting on a forum I try to be helpful.....you never know who might be the other person and what situation they are in
