Multi-leg journeys - when to interchange?

This is more for concepts and practicalities like missing a tram / bus connection, etc. than genuine trips I will be making.

At peak times, there are some trams that operate from Connolly to Saggart. If travelling from the Point to Saggart on a tram, when should I leave the first tram and get into the one heading direct to Saggart?

Similarly, if travelling from SSG to Brides Glen on a tram that terminates at Sandyford, when should I interchange?

If travelling from North Circular Road to Brides Glen on a bus, when should I change from the 46a to the 145?

the last stop you can get off a point tram is belgard & i would change there, because the tram to saggart will be least full, in peak hours, and later in the evening you have to change there (after 8pm i think) when travelling to/ coming from town.

I'd tend to agree - if you're on a tram/bus/train stay on it as long as you can - if there's a problem at least you're closer to your destination.

If I'm getting the Dart to Greystones and a Bray dart arrives first I'll get on it, as it's sods law that if I wait for the next one some clown will hit a bridge in the meantime.

Donnybrook Church is 13 stages from the terminus at the Phoenix Park, that will cost you €2.05 using a Leap card but it's more than 13 stages from there to the stop near Brides' Glen on the 145 route. So you have two options, both will cost €3.65 ........

    1. Pay €2.60 and stay on the 46A until at least Mt. Merrion Ave which means you might as well change at Stillorgan Cross. It will then cost you a net €1.05 to travel the <13 stages to the stop near Brides Glen.

    2. Pay €2.05 and get off the 46A at Donnybrook Church, then board the 145 and pay €2.60 (net €1.60) to your destination

Balealy on the green line, its sheltered.

Is it legal to change anywhere on the tramlines? or are you supposed to change at sandyford/busárus/belgard i.e. the last stop before the branch

I agree, it happened to me more than once. You want to get ahead as far as you can.

That's fine for the Dart because (per your example) you can get out at Bray and wait on the platform for the Greystones train without having to validate your ticket but it's different with the bus as sometimes you need to exit the first bus before you exceed a threshold of fare stages. In most cases, going to the limit doesn't make economic sense with DB.

The Leap DB fare of €2.05 covers up to 13 stages and if you're doing a journey which involves two buses who's routes overlap for a considerable distance (like Victor's example with the 46A and 145) then it usually makes sense to go as far as you can on the overlapping section of the routes until you get to 13 stages, then switch to the other route and you'll get another 13 stages for €1.05.

    fare enough :pac:

the stage fare system is an ass, but we knew that already.

For me I would tend to interchange as early as I can if I don't have a seat on the first mode of transport and as late if I do have a seat.

Bus stops with a good shelter is a also a valuable point of interchange.

Sometimes it's worth staying on the service as long as possible in case as rail line goes down or something.

Taking advantage of areas where stage costs max out. Ie if the bus fare covers 3 to 5 stages then take the 5 rather than the 3 and you may save money on the next journey.

If there's a spot that gives you a choice of multiple busses that helps too as you wil likely be picked up quicker.
