Paint over silky paint

I am painting over a silky wall paint that had bright strong colours (dark brown, blue). I am using a white undercoat. I have done two coats and the underlying colour is still showing through. How well should it be covered?

The undercoat is also not sticking very well to the underlying paint.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks

Go down to a decent paint shop and ask them. If the original paint is water based, get an acrylic primer. If oil based , get an oil based or shellac based primer.

Thanks. It is water based underneath (I think) and we got primer but it is the primer that won't stick!

Paint coverage is not what it used to be. I guess you’re using white Matt which you got for pennies. Crap coverage. It’ll take 4 coats and then go with your final colour, 2 coats. What brand of paint are you using (undercoat and final colour)?

What primer are you using? I'd recommend zinsser primer, 123 is pretty good and will stick to anything. Not cheap though.

As said above go to a paint shop and ask for advice and they will give you the right primer for the job.
