Convert en suite to dressing room

    Hi folks,
We have an en suite off our bedroom with bathroom and sink but no toilet. We never use it apart from storage really. We have two kids in teenage years but we never are stuck for the shower in the main bathroom. My wife is always complaining about having no makeup / dressing space so im half thinking of converting the en suite for her. It would envolve removing the bath and sink and capping pipes etc. I assume that's a job for a plumber. It's tiles floor to ceiling. Rather than remove the wall tiles would be possible to cover them with say a sheet of plaster board, paint that and maybe put in some handy flooring like laminate or something?

Also would need some wiring done for lights around a mirror and a switch. Possibly some wardrobe space in one end with a couple of shelves or something.

Hoping it wouldn't cost the earth as a pretty small space.

    Cheers,
    Mike

Have a really good re-think on getting rid of an en-suite. Is there a nook or somewhere that you could put a dressing table for make-up etc. While you may not want an ensuite now; think of the future. Just a suggestion................

Yes I hear you. If we had more kids I'd definitely hold onto it. At the moment it has a bath that we out in when kids were smaller. A shower would be better but again with only the two kids the main bathroom is never under much pressure. Might try it as a dressing room / walk in wardrobe for a few years and converting back would be straight forward enough. I've seen a few people suggest you can wallpaper over tiles if you put filler in between the tiles and sand the tile surface. Sounds a bit like a hack job. I'd rather not have to remove the tiles though as be messy round.
    Cheers,
    Mick

If you are convinced.....I would plasterboard it over the tiles rather than try to wallpaper it. You will need to shut off the water etc. which will be probably more permanent than temporary. Personally Id change the bath into an enclosed shower unit which would free up some space. But that's me.

What are the dimensions of the room? Is there a restricted ceiling height?

If you really want to do it, I'd try to leave the sink in. It won't cause steam and being able to brush your teeth and wash your face can be very handy in a dressing space.

I wouldn't worry about the tiles until you decide on the fit out. If you're using something like ikeas wardrobes there'll be no need to change them. If you want to fix shelves to the wall then a layer of plasterboard won't help.

I'll measure this evening. It's full height ceiling.

This is a bit of a side note, but really look into what kind of lighting she wants. En suites tend to have quite poor natural lighting so if she's using it as a place to do make up you may have to look at using artificial lights. A lot of the popular make up lights require sockets or additional wiring so you might need to get an electrician to look at wiring the room.

Took a quick measure this evening. It's a small space. 6 foot long by 4 foot 4 wide.

If we left the little corner sink in place width at that end would be 3 foot 3 inches.

The attachment with the mirror and lights be sort of what I'm thinking.

    Thanks,
    Mick

Would it be ridiculous to cover the walls with panels like this?

I'm guessing if the bath was removed panelling could be stuck to the tiles and wallpapered over?

Those light sets are from Ikea and they require a plug for each strip, so two for that set up. An electrician will be able to wire them to a light switch if you prefer, that's what I had done with my set.

Rather than the white paneling - would mdf or some other material be better? for convenience might wallpaper over - if its the white paneling would need a primer, I assume any wooden material would need a primer of some sort to paper over. Would it be crazy to think you could use something like no more nails to stick paneling to the tiles? Might had some covering to the ceiling. Trying to keep the cost below 500 euro and that would include the dressing table maybe .. probably tight. Also thinking of carpeting the floor. If I remove the corner sink I can fit in a wider wardrobe but as mentioned the sink might be useful to keep for washing off makeup or brushing teeth etc. Just wondering I should ahead and get plumber to remove the bath. At least that will leave a blank canvass to work with.
