New (powerful) laptop recommendation

Hi another laptop recommendation thread. Have no preference for online or bricks and mortar - will go with the best value option

Budget: €1,500ish, moveable but not too much more upwards

Intended use: Working from home occasionally but am going to buy a Mavic Pro drone so will start doing some video editing also

What Operating System do you use? Windows

Was advised to go for 16gb of RAM with a decent sized SSD. Had a look online, was looking at something like this

    Couple of questions:

    - would i only having an SSD be an issue for people?
    - this is a refurb (though an A1 refurb), the non-refurb is only about an extra €150. Is the discount on the refurb big enough

Alternatively was looking at gaming laptops though I'm not a gamer. Was told the graphics card would be a big help for video editing

Tbh I'm very far removed from an expert and any advice, including comments on the machines linked or alternatives, would be greatly appreciated

    Thanks in advance

EDIT: Lastly, is it worth waiting for Black Friday

Black Friday is only 5 days away, no harm seeing what happens!

I don't like Fujitsu, they are not big players in the laptop world and both of those options strike me as old school in a number of ways. The processors are 6th generation, where as we are onto 8th gen Core i5/i7 processors these days.

If I were you I would be looking at a Dell XPS15. The models with 16GB are above your budget, but this is something that you can upgrade yourself if you are forced to buy one of the lesser models.

As for having only an SSD. There is nothing wrong with going this route. The only slight concern is storage space. SSDs are generally smaller than HDDs. Given that you will be shooting 4K footage (I presume...), it would be wise to have some external storage anyway, as 4K video will fill even a large 512GB SSD quickly.

SSDs are definitely the way to go either way. They are just amazingly fast, and will make any computer feel like a super computer in terms of speed.

Thanks for the reply, a Dell like this one (€1,637.97 - think TopCashBack give a small few % in cashback too)

    https://www.laptopsdirect.ie/-xc9m1/version.asp

Note I'm not wedded to buying from laptops direct, they were cheapest when I googled XPS-15

Btw I remember hearing that even though the .ie site quotes Euro prices you're billed in sterling. Anyone know if this is true? (want to know if I should use Revolut or my credit card if I decide to buy through them)

I would try and go through Dell for the XPS to be honest.

The one you have linked is not the current model. It has a 6th generation processor, instead of the 7th generation that Dell.ie has. And Dell appears to sell a similar spec machine for 100 more. With a bit of digging, or talking to a sales rep you might get a few % off that price.

Intel is now selling 8th generation processors in a lot of laptops. But it appears that the XPS15 has not received these yet. It shouldn't make a huge difference to be honest, but every little bit helps.

    I have a Dell inspiron 15 7000 gaming edition.

They have 2 SSD bay’s, and come with one as standard.

They come with 16gb ram, but can easily add another
stick. Up to 32gb. 1 screw back lid.

Screen and video performance is fantastic. 4K resolution, gtx 1050i.

    7th Gen CPU’s.

And the case looks pretty slick.

Hi - sorry could you link to the machine in question? Any XPS-15 machines I looked at were far more expensive. Thanks

Sorry, the price I saw was actually 1798.99:

    http://www.dell.com/en-ie/shop/laptops/xps-15/spd/xps-15-9560-laptop

It's a lot of machine for the money, but obviously it is a huge sum of money to spend on a laptop. It's worth noting that the machine above for 1798.99 has the 4K monitor which is a plus too.

Dell gave a 15% off code for Black Friday. UK price -15% beats this so would like to buy

Anyone know if they'll deliver to Parcel Motel or Address Pal? Pretty sure website says they don't deliver to PO Boxes (have seen other people say other companies who won't deliver to PO Boxes don't do. Parcel Motel)
