We have bought a 1970's built semi detached house. We are going to build an extension at the back and upgrade the existing house. I am trying to get advise about which type of insulation we should get for the existing house. I have been getting conflicting advise from both builders and companies who supply the various types of insulation. I would welcome unbiased opinions from anyone who has good knowledge of both External and Internal Insulation.

This is my understanding of the pro's and cons of each type.

    External Insulation
Pros: Many say it is the more energy effecient.
Cons: More expensive. The front of our house is red brick and the red brick facade is additional cost. It's easily dented or damaged particularly where one has young children and very difficult to repair.

    Internal Insulation
Pros: Less expensive than external insulation
When re wiring and replumbing walls will need to be opened anyway and new plasterboard so not such a lot of extra work.
Cons: Most people saying it's not as effective, as energy effecient, as external insulation .
I have been told risk of mould growing between original wall and insulation.
It seems to me that thete is that more risk of incorrect fitting than with external insulation.
    Loose space in the room.

I'd appreciate any advise or opinions.
