No junk mail

    Hey,

Just a curious thought I've had as it's been annoying me and understand this is a simple non issue to some but I'm opening the thread for discussion purposes

For a good while we were getting junk mail in our post box. Nearly filling it up so we got a no junk mail sticker and put it on the flap of the box so it's not like it can't be seen.

We still receive some junk mail from all types of different organisations and some don't have contact details.

Are there any legal implications for companies who disregard the "no junk mail" sign?

Would they probably defer the issue to the company who distributed their material or does the responsibility fall back to the owner of the material?

    Any input is appreciated

In the past I have rang takeaways etc and told them I will not bee using their sevices going forward due to them ignoring my no junk mail sign. If or makes them consider ignoring for another person, that's great

I've a No Junk Mail notice on my door. AnPost are the biggest offenders for posting junk mail and I get the occasional local newspaper.

Those that have contact details are properly mail and An Post are obliged to deliver them. However, An Post shouldn't give you unaddressed flyers, etc.

The rest are delivered by people on or below minimum wage, so stopping them may be difficult.

They are permitted to do so.

Nothing to do with the legal side of things but sometimes it's the only way for a small one man business to advertise. I did leaflet drops myself when I started out in the mid 80s. It's a horrible job delivering leaflets. You can get angry homeowners.

I get annoyed about menu's (how many do you need per year) & the likes but I don't mind when I see a young tradesman or any start out business.

What's the definition of "Junk" that you expect An Post, all couriers and others being paid to put things in letter boxes to adhere to and what if any legislation obligates them to comply should a three word statement ("No Junk Mail") be displayed within X distance of a letter box?

Would the same rules apply and have to be adhered to of the displayed message was "No brown envelopes" or "No Bills" or "No Valentine Cards" etc?

There were rumours of a "No Santa Letters" sign posted at the North Pole, as it turns out it was only a rumour - I feel happy knowing the big lad will receive my "I want an Xbox this year" letter, had it been true the postal service could have ruined XMas. :)

Mods strongly support Santa and all his projects

My non legal definition of Junk Mail is anything posted through my letter box that does not have my name and address, they go straight into the bin.

If you're getting junk mail delivered by the postie give it them back! I scribble "NO JUNK MAIL" across the front and stick it in one of their post boxes when passing. If everyone did this it would be enormously expensive to process all the returned rubbish in the post, forcing them to reconsider contracts to deliver junk mail in the first place.

    some don't have contact details.

Surely the most pointless advertising ever.

Worse culprits for junk mail since we put up a No Junk Mail sign are definitely An Post. But there's certainly no legal obligation from anyone to adhere to such a sign. Just a courtesy if they do.

    Junk mail creates Jobs.
The paper manufacturer, the ink company, graphic designers, printers, people paid to deliver, people paid to waste and many more people involved. People don't get kilos of junk mail a day! Just bin it and keep creating and maintaining employment.

Write to the clients of the junk mailer and tell him you do not support any business employing a delivery person who ignores your sign

i know someone who used to get mail through postman from company x addressed to the resident 123 any street anywhere with a return address of box yyy dublin. so he used to send it back unopened with no stamp, addressed to the resident box yyy dublin and for good measure would stick adverts for their competitor on the back of the envelope. they soon stopped sending it

It raises costs for businesses and when its ignored/binned it ends up being a complete waste of money. Its almost impossible to know how effective the ad was - unlike virtually every other form of advertising; and its one of the few forms that actively annoys people.

That does not mean a householder is obliged to receive it. let them put it in their own letterbox since people who do not want it dump it

Bothers me less than pop ups and those ads in the middle of online articles that you have to take real care not to accidentally touch. Junk mail goes straight into the recycling, no hassle.

Or those radio ads where two people yammer back and forth
