Im in the market for a cattle trailer. Im leaning towards the tri axle for bigger space but i hear alot of lads saying that there is alot of noise been made by the cops about the size of them behind jeeps. The double axle looks more tidy behind a jeep.Just wondering what ye think about both options

Number of axles doesn't matter. It's the weight of the trailer and load. You will never be able to fill a 14' tri axle and tow it legally behind a jeep. They are easier towed and more stable than a double axle but no point going around half empty all the time.

I never thought of that.If the cops force the issue there will be alot of farmers with fines and points then.

Don't think the size of a trailer matters as far as guards are concerned. Think it's more to do with if it looks wrong, it probably is. They tend to stop anything that doesn't look right. Lights not working, no number plate, loads not properly secured ( Rachet straps ) for open top trailers or overloading. Personally I'd prefer a twin axel as imagine the triaxle is heavier on the towing vehicle and you'd have less carrying capacity. Cannt go over 3.5 tonne either way.

Which company makes the best trailer.id imagine they can’t be much of a difference between the big makes.prob just owners preference

I was at the local safety event lately and they were weighing jeeps and trailers it was very interesting , the guard from Clare was very nice and went trough in detail , he made out that 90%of lads were overweight on the road , and the one thing he highlighted was the land cruiser was nearly a tonne less gross than the likes of the pajero and the ranger

I'd advise go with the tri-axle for stability plus extra room (can you get 14' in double-axles ?) You can also pull them with a tractor you know.

They are illegal behind a tractor too. The hitch is rated to 3.5 tonnes so the tractor can only tow the same weight in them as a cruiser.

The cruiser can tow 2800 a tri axel ifor is 1355kg so leaves ur load of 1455kg which would be two big cows in the big trailer , thats what I gathered anyway

At some stage the Gardai will clamp down on cattle trailer weights. When they do it will cause havoc to the lads with jeeps and trailers. A 12X6 is hardly legal behind a landcruiser if fully loaded not to mind some of the bigger ones. An 8X5 loaded with 5 weanling is at or above 2000 kgs.

I thought the new land cruiser was rated to 3500kg. I might be wrong though but you get my gist anyway. Tractors are not the silver bullet for towing these trailers.

Don't know that I'm just recalling the figures the guard had up after weighing . It was the last version Toyota that was on weigh bridge by him not latest

    Think he may be right.
Guard was also saying something similar about the newish, maybe not the current model but the previous one at one of those trailer info days a while ago.
Think he mentioned that all the public services are getting the ford rangers for that reason as more towing capacity??
    Haven't looked into it myself.
Think those trailer hitches are only rated for a certain weight too. So even if you had it full behind a tractor you could be in breach of the regulations or at least not covered by insurance for exceeding the weight limit of the hitch. Again..??

Edit: I should read all the thread before posting as all this has been discussed here and not just click on last post and respond to that one. Apologies.

Correct he said that alright that the likes of the coast guard and opw have all changed from Toyota to pajero and ranger for the towing ability

Must be the mantra for the open days then. My one was in enniscorthy.
Think it was this time last year now it's that long ago.

I think the current version of the LC has been increased, but the previous version 03 onwards, was definitely no more then 3 tonne. Also correct on the trailers their only rated up to max of 3.5 tonne. A lot of ifor 8x5 and 10x5 are rated for 2.8 tonne

Which would be the best make for towing and quality
