Automatics....

Hi all,

My parents are half thinking of a small automatic car, nothing bigger than a 1.6 [prefer a 1.4] petrol for maninly city driving and the odd longer spin. What is available out there in the used market? Doubt it's a big one...not much call for autos here in Ireland.

But you don't mention budget, age of car, location etc so you can refine this more yourself.

I wanted to keep it as open as possible but the budget would be less than €10,000. Ideally anything from 2009 upward and in Cork.

She has almost always driven Toyota's and is used to having a reliable car to use so it needs to be well put together if not that fast. I thought the automatic Mazda 2 might be an idea...

For soem reason she can't seem to get herself to like the CitiGo or the Up etc.

The Honda Insight looks a nice job. Might be a little too big though. I still think the Mazda 2, even if she had to travel to get it, would be the nicest of the lot.

Bear in mind that most of those 'automatics' are just clutchless manuals - they're not going to be nice to drive at all.

Also, the first car is a Japanese import (the clue is in the name - Mazda always sold their domestic cars by names rather than numbers).

My 2009 Octavia I traded in is 1.4 TSI dsg. Unfortunately it's in Co Wexford but it's a great car. It's on the Donohoes Skoda site.

A Yaris hybrid, going to the UK for one would bring one well within budget. VRT is low on hybrids.

that citego is definetly a ex rental that been trash to an inch of it life up and down the wild atlantic way for 18 months solid

+2 on Toyota Yaris Hybrid.
Good Toyota reliability and very comfortable and easy to drive especially for town driving. If you import one from UK, the VRT is lower than importing a normal petrol car. And it'll probably be higher spec and better condition than a second hand Irish model.

If its too much hassle you can hire a garage to do it for you. They all seem to have importing arrangements set up (for a price, of course!)

Gearboxes not great in them either.

Depending on the length of the longer trips and availability of driveway, an electric vehicle should be high on the list. You should be able to purchase a 2013-15 LEAF on the budget of about €10k. They are not particularly small cars but cheap to run, reliable and very easy drive.

Thanks for all of the replies everyone. I'm still leaning towards a Honda Jazz (or Fit). Most automatic ones are Japanese imports, anything to be worried about there?

Any other cars that I've missed out on talking about? I'd love them to have a nice car that they can enjoy owning and enjoy getting in and out of.

Used 2009+ Honda Jazz comes with two different automatic gearbox(ishift and CVT). I guess it was ishift between 2009-2012 then CVT after they dropped ishift from all models.

Aim for CVT gearbox for comfort and ease of drive.

Not sure about Japanese import fits though as japanese models generally have CVT/torque convertor gearboxes while their european counerparts uses single clutch gearboxes like ishift, mmt, etc

Any issues with the Japanese import CVT boxes?

I wonder am I blindsiding any other cars here? The Yaris Hybrid has been mentioned but unsure if that fits the budget.

Issues with Japanese imports are not related to reliability. More like harder to insure, aftermarket radios, hardship to source some parts which is different than the european model, etc.

I drove a japanese import toyota yaris(vitz) for 3 years due to learner driver at home. It was perfect but tired of being penalized for insurance every year at the end.

All good points, nice to know.

The Gen 1 Fit/Jazz had a few issues with the Starter Clutch in the CVT juddering on take off. Something to watch for if doing a test drive. Was solved with the 2nd Gen, where the CVT uses a Torque Converter. Also, iShift is to be avoided from what I've heard.
