Hi looking for some advice please,

I have an old Dell desktop as a home office pc, Intel core Duo and still running Vista!
Its getting slower and slower and I'm afraid of losing everything if it dies, (happened before years ago).
Also have a 6 yr old Asus laptop running W10.

Is it a big job to migrate everything to the laptop or should I go for a new machine? Pc or laptop.

    Thanks

    Backup your important files first!

I recommend using BOTH online backup (e.g. Google Drive https://www.google.com/drive/ ) and a USB harddrive.

After that, yes I would recommend upgrading your work machine to a new/used desktop capable of running Windows 10, since Vista support ended earlier this year in April.

What model Dell is it? If it's early Core 2 just scrap it and get a cheap 2nd hand i5 machine for €150 on Ebay - installing Win10 on the earlier Core2 models won't work as some sound/other drivers may be missing.

If it's any of the newer Core2 range, you could just install Win10 on it without too much issue. At this stage, even upgrading the processor on those machines can be as little as €10 for a 100% increase in performance. Don't get me wrong, they're still old - but fairly capable for basic use still.

How do I find out what core?

    Ok, its a Core 2 Duo E7200 @2.53ghz
    2gb ram
    32 bit
    500gb hard drive

    Suitable for an upgrade?

I'd say it is in the scrappage range. There are options, but it's more hassle than it is worth.
Backup like Kiki said, then grab an ex-business machine from Adverts or Ebay. An i5/i7 such as the i5 2500, or i7 2600 are excellent.
