Hi all, need a bit of advise!! Two years ago I rented accommodation, while we rented we made the decision not to pay our Irish water bill. When it was time to move out and get our deposit back from the auctioneers, the auctioneers told us that we couldn't get our deposit back unless we paid the Irish water bill! As we needed the deposit, the auctioneers took the money for the Irish water bill out of our deposit and "paid" it for us. When we heard people were being refunded the Irish water money recently, we contacted Irish water to receive our money back only to be told the bill was NEVER PAID! the auctioneers never paid the money they took from our deposit... Help! What can we do??? 260euro is a lot of money....

You could always suggest to the Auctioneer they give you back the money- or you'll lodge a smalls claim court claim- it'll only cost you 15 quid and you can do it online- and it'll be on the public record then if anyone googles the auctioneer............

SCC fee is €25, and disputes related to rented accomadation (lease) are excluded, op would have to go to RTB.

While that's true, a dodgy auctioneer might not know that, so may be motivated by the threat and the offer to avoid it being on the public record.

Also, it's not clear exactly what the complaint to the RTB would be, given that the deposit was returned. Agreed that in practical terms, the auctioneer has done wrong, it's just that proving it legally may cost more than €260.
